1990's Rock

Featured Replies

Several friends and I are coming up with a massive 1990's rock playlist. We already have a ton of songs on there but could always use more suggestions. So let's hear what you have. We are using a very broad definition of what constitutes rock so base your suggestions on what "rock" is in your mind.

An example of one that is on the fringes is "You Oughta Know" - Alanis Morissette. A song many may not consider to be "rock" but I will contend it is a seminal rock song of the 1990's.

We are trying to lean towards songs that most people would recognize. But if you have something you feel must be on the list then by all means include it.

By and large, I think "Seattle" when I think 90's rock. That being said:

  • Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, Down On The Upside
  • Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness, and to a lesser extent, Adore, and Machina/The Machines of God
  • Pearl Jam - Ten, Vs., Vitalogy, No Code
  • Nirvana - All of 'em
  • Alice In Chains - Facelift, Jar Of Flies, SAP, Dirt, Alice In Chains
  • Mudhoney - Piece of Cake, My Brother the Cow
  • Screaming Trees - Uncle Anesthesia, Sweet Oblivion, Dust
  • Stone Temple Pilots - Core, Purple, Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop

Nice man, thanks for the suggestions and there is definitely stuff on there I haven't heard before (Mudhoney I know by name but I'm not familiar with and Screaming Trees are a band I've never heard of). Any certain songs to go with these albums?

Candlebox -- "You", "Far Behind"

Live -- "I Alone", "Lightning Crashes", "All Over You"

Oasis -- "Champagne Supernova", "Wonderwall", "Don't Go Away", "Don't Look Back in Anger"

Big Wreck -- "Blown Wide Open"

The Black Crowes -- "Hard to Handle", "She Talks to Angels", "Remedy"

Gin Blossoms -- "Hey Jealousy"

Blues Traveler -- "Hook", "Run-Around"

Faith No More -- "Epic", "Midlife Crisis"

Foo Fighters -- "I'll Stick Around", "Big Me", "This is a Call", "Monkeywrench", "Everlong", "Breakout", "Learn to Fly"

That's just some off the top of my head and a quick glance at the iPod. I'll be back to this thread later, I love 90's music.

I'd say, at least as far as "popularity" goes, Mudhoney's two most recognizable songs were "Touch Me I'm Sick", and "Overblown". Screaming Trees...I'd probably go with "Nearly Lost You", "All I Know", "Shadow Of The Season", "Bed Of Roses", and "Sworn and Broken".

Major flashbacks. Some great music came out of the 90's

Nice :thumb:

I always liked "Dam At Otter Creek" by Live, and "The Oaf" & "By The Way" by Big Wreck too.

One that just popped up on my playlist...

Screaming Cheetah Wheelies - Magnolia

Cool deal. What were your favorites from them?

Great suggestions guys, keep 'em coming.

Here are a few bands we've been discussing I'd love to hear opinions on (remember this is based on their work in the 1990's).

Presidents of the United States of America: specifically "Lump" and "Peaches".

Green Day

Sublime: specifically their self-titled LP.

Beck: specifically his early work besides "Loser".

Marilyn Manson

Rob Zombie

Weezer

Oh man.. Sublime was a great band/album... "What I Got", "Wrong Way", "Santeria" are all great off of the self-titled album... But "40 oz. to Freedom" and "Date Rape" are awesome as well. They have others, of course, but those are the ones that jump out at me.

Never was too big on Green Day, but they did have some good songs on Dookie... Specifically "Basket Case" and "When I Come Around"...

Marilyn Manson -- "Lunchbox", "The Beautiful People", "Tourniquet, " Antichrist Superstar", "Angel with the Scabbed Wings", "The Dope Show", "Coma White", "The Last Day on Earth"

Rob Zombie -- "Thunder Kiss '65", "Black Sunshine" (White Zombie), "Superbeast", "Dragula", "Living Dead Girl"... Most of my favorites by him were post 2000, though.

Never was a big Beck guy... Don't know anything about PotUSoA other than the songs you mentioned, and I like them both.

Blind Melon - No Rain

Jane's Addiction - Jane Says, Been Caught Stealing

Temple Of The Dog - Say Hello To Heaven, Hungerstrike

Toadies - The entire "Rubberneck" album. I still freaking love that album.

Weezer - Anything from the Blue Album or from Pinkerton. I could do without the rest of their career.

Spacehog - In The Meantime (One of my personal favorite bass lines ever.)

Poe - Trigger Happy Jack, Angry Johnny (Man, she was hot.)

Mad Season - River Of Deceit

Silverchair - Israel's Son, Tomorrow, Pure Massacre

Seven Mary Three - Cumbersome, Devil Boy, My My, Water's Edge

Semisonic - Closing Time, Singing In My Sleep

Filter - Hey Man Nice Shot, Take A Picture, Skinny

Hum - Stars (One of my FAVORITE songs to come out of the 90's.)

The Flaming Lips - She Don't Use Jelly

Cracker - Low

Smashing Pumpkins - Drown (AWESOME b-side from the Singles movie soundtrack.)

Stone Temple Pilots - Dancing Days (Outstanding cover version of Zeppelin's song from the tribute album "Encomium".)

Radiohead - The Bends is a great 90's rock album, but OK Computer was one of the albums to revolutionize the "Alternative" genre, as far as I'm concerned.

Cool deal. What were your favorites from them?

Well, I'm not particularly a Mudhoney or Screaming Trees aficionado, but I'd say of those that I listed, I'd go with "Touch Me I'm Sick", "Nearly Lost You" "Shadow Of The Season" and Sworn And Broken".

Alice In Chains - Impossible for me to talk about the 90s without talking about how much I loved this band. To my mind, "Rooster" is their song of songs, but "Would?" and "Down In A Hole" are also have to be discussed.

Metallica - Not much of a Metallica fan, but the Black Album spent a huge chunk of time on the charts early in the decade and I've always liked "The Unforgiven."

Pixies - They were probably at their best in the late 80s, but their cover of "Head On" from Trompe le Monde is excellent. Pixies were just always good and it's impossible not for me to talk about them here.

Pavement - "Gold Soundz" is one of the best tracks of the 90s but I think all five Pavement albums are excellent a worth a listen.

There are a lot more. I could talk about this all day really.
