December 21, 201015 yr I would have drafted an O-lineman in the 1st round, but I had no problem with them taking Gresham. He's actually played fairly well this season despite his inability to take care of the football. The current coaching staff didn't use a TE often enough to justify a 1st rounder IMO. That was my problem. Also Hernandez was just as good and played the year before and they could have got him later. His issues should have made him a perfect fit for the Bengals. They also just used a 3rd round pick on a pass catching TE the year before. If they were dying to add a new toy it should have been Dez Bryant because they were old and bad at WR. No matter what Brown panicked because he thought it was now a passing league even though they just won a really tough division by running the ball and playing solid D.
December 22, 201015 yr What have the Bengals under Mike Brown have ever won? And, please don't say two division titles. Try winning a playoff game. Yes, I am a Browns fan and not all Browns fans are obnoxious. The Browns will eventually "right the ship" under Mike Holmgren as team President. The following two statements are if I have said it once I have said it a thousand times. 1. If division titles and playoff wins don't happen under Mike Holmgren, then Cleveland truly is cursed. And, 2. The Bengals will never win a playoff game with Mike Brown in control of that franchise. Mike Brown could care less about the playoffs--He's only interested in "payoffs", and the suckers in Cincy will continue to line his pocket by buying tickets to watch his semi-pro team lose year after year!! Signed, A former "sucker" who's been clean for 10 years now.

Bryant is a stud but Gresham is on pace for 55 catches and is also very talented. The problem is they have no identity and if they choose to be a power running team then I can't argue with the Gresham pick since play action can be very successful with a stud TE.

That's the problem. They had an identity that worked and they changed it.
December 22, 201015 yr That's the problem. They had an identity that worked and they changed it. They had an identity that BARELY worked last sesaon. We very easily could have been 0 and 4 to start last season. The difference is we won games at the end by coming back by passing the ball. This year we had chances at the end too, except we didn't win them this time.

Why are people not admitting that they changed their ways? Two of three early round picks were pass catchers and they signed two free agent wide receivers. If you or anyone think they didn't want to throw it more you're wrong IMO.
December 24, 201015 yr All this because they got the lead and ran the ball on the Browns, one of the worst run defenses in the NFL. My, my, my. As I said above, let's see what happens the next two weeks. Obviously if it is just philosophy, with the win over the Browns then they will run, run and run some more the next two weeks. Let's see how that goes.

If you or anyone think they didn't want to throw it more you're wrong IMO. Yes they did change their ways some. Not to mention getting behind in games early unlike last year, didn't help matters this year. However my point is lets not act like last years way was a way they could keep winning at. Last years way kept us in games, and then we had the passing game lead us down for game winning scores. This year we were in basically every game too, and we just found ways to lose. My point is even if we did what we did last year, it wouldn't have matter. We were in basically every game last year too, we just didn't find ways to win them. If you think about it, last years way sucked after the first part of the year. We were very fortunate to start off 4 and 1 last year, when it could have easily be 0 and 4 or 5.
January 4, 201115 yr I don't believe there was a change in offensive philosophy. I think the fact is the Bengals have not been very good running the ball this year. Add to that the fact they have played from behind almost all season as was stated above and it is clear why there are fewer runs per game this season. I think this is one of those stats that viewed in a vacuum seem to make a point but when you look at the whole picture, it means little. The Bengals IMO wanted to run the ball as much this year as they did last year. They just weren't very good at it this year. The key stat that points this out is Benson averaging only 3.6 yards per carry. Pulled stats from Lance's blog 3rd and 1.....Rush 65%/Pass 35% in 2010.......81% Rush/Pass 19% in 2009 2nd and 10....Rush 45%/Pass 55% in 2010.....Rush 57%/Pass 43% in 2009 2nd and 9.....Rush 27%/Pass 73% in 2010.....Rush 66%/Pas 34% in 2009 2nd and 5.....Rush 57%/Pas 43% in 2010.......Rush 81%/Pass 19% in 2009 1st and 10....Rush 47%/Pass 53% in 2010.....Rush 56%/Pass 44% in 2009 Carson Palmer attempted a franchise record 586 passes this season They were down some, but most games they were in all the way through. I'd say they wanted to throw it more.
