28 pts, 12 stls, 8 rbs

 

When was the last time a nky guard put up numbers like that? Bud Wimzie said Hayes' 23 pts and 10 stls at the half were a school record.

 

I guess the point of this thread is to talk about some of the best OVERALL performances in 9th region history. Where does this one rank?

 

(Keep in mind Walter is still somewhat young, so this could be just an average performance in a lot of people's eyes)

I'll see if I can get other stats but Jack Jennings scored 68 against NCC in 1988 and I know had a ton of rebounds that night and Scott Draud put up 69 against Holmes in 1986 without the 3 pt shot. I know Draud had some unbelievable free throw numbers that night.

Duran Jefferson's 12pts, 10 assists, 10 rebounds in the 05 regional final.

Regardless of historical significance, this was an amazing statline. Imagine if he had played the entire game.

 

How was this kid left off of the Region's top ten players?! I'd put him at number one thus far.

I agree. Chris Hayes, IMO, is the best all around guard in nky. His athleticism, speed, and quickness is matched by no other guard in nky.

 

He also dropped 30 on Tamron Manning and Scott Co a few weeks ago. I'd consider him one of the elite guards in this years' senior class in KY.

No disrespect to Kellen as I think he is one of the best point guards in the state, but when I think of best OVERALL and ALL AROUND guard in nky, that honor goes to Chris Hayes.

 

Luckily for us, Scott and Holmes play in about a month so we'll be able to see that matchup as will a lot of other people as Scott v Holmes is one of our nkysports.com broadcasts.

Chris is a very solid PG that can definitely get to the rim and score. The only flaw that I see thus far is his lack of assists..3, 2, 1 averaging 2 per game. To be considered the best all around, I think he needs to distribute the ball better. Again, there is no doubt he can score and play aggressive D.

Hayes is a good player who is playing in a great system for his skill set but what are you basing overall and all around? Hayes is averaging 18 ppg and Smith around 15 ppg. Smith will average significantly more assists which means he is contributing more to the teams total points by percentage. Not to mention that at this point in the season he has more steals and rebounds per game than Hayes?

 

Before you anoint Hayes the next great player from Holmes lets let an entire season play out. He put up a great stat line against a severely depleted St Henry team. Without Barnett St Henry is really going to struggle at the guard position. Hayes is going to get an opportunity to go against some good guards in Smith, Trammell and Flesch in this area. If he puts up those numbers against the better guards all year then he will get the recognition. Until that time I will go with the guys who have already done it consistently on the big stages in their career.

Kellen Smith is a very unselfish player. He makes everyone around him better. Kellen could avg. 25+ ppg if he wanted to but thats not his game. I've seen the kid go nearly a whole half without even taking a shot. And I don't ever remember seeing anyone handle the ball and pass as well as Kellen does. Also a very good rebounder and defender. Is forced at times to defend much taller players and holds his own in doing so. The kid is tough as nails. I bet there isn't another player in NKY that has more responsibility but upon them as Kellen Smith has. Very entertaining player to watch and i have no idea how he will do at the next level, but IMO, he's the best high school player in NKY.

You guys are both forgetting that Hayes is a 2 guard...not PG, so the assist comment is a moot point. Mayfield and Palmer run the point for Holmes, not Hayes.

 

You guys also failed to mention that Hayes sat out all but 2 minutes of the second half against St. Henry and sat out 10 mins against Brossart, so naturally his numbers are going to be a little lower. Just ask Tamron Manning of Scott Co how good Hayes is. Hayes had 30 on him, 16 in the first half.

 

Not often you see 5'11 guards skying through the lane for tip back dunks either. The kid is athletic as they come and his defense is extremely good because of his quickness.

 

As far as rebounds go, Holmes plays a 2-3 zone so it's tougher for the guards to get a lot of rebounds because they're always out on the perimeter.

 

If you're saying Kellen is better because of stats, I can't put much credibility in to your posts. Smith's numbers were better than Holmes' big 3 last year, but does that mean he's better than them too? What about Blake Bryan who averaged over 20 a game? Is he the best guard because he averaged the most points? Get out and see Hayes play then get back to me. I think you'll be impressed.

 

Coach Booher, who coached last years' Mr. Basketball and career steal leader in the state of Kentucky, said without a doubt Hayes is one of the best guards he's ever coached from a talent standpoint. His size is his biggest downfall, as he only goes about 5'11.
