The new super district in 6A will have a big effect on 6A, I'm just not sure what it will be. One possibility is that teams that haven't been able to win a district title will now do so and generate enthusiasm and growth for their program. The other possibility is that the super district will suck all of the air out of 6A and the rest of 6A will be ignored. Male was largely overlooked this year on their way to the championship game. Will a super district do the same thing to Ballard? It will be fun to see how it plays out. I have maintained from the beginning that the new alignment has the least affect on Trinity and X. To win the title they have to beat the other and four others. That is the same under both the old and new alignment. The public school rising powers like Ballard will win their district but they will enter the playoffs with zero experience against the teams you have to beqat on the way to the title. Male and Manual could end up as the eventual public school winners from this.

It will rotate. Next year the first round opponents for the super district will be Central Hardin, Meade County, Nelson County and the 5th place NKY 6A team. I want to go one the record right now predicting a super district sweep in the first round of the playoffs in 2011.

If it did, the football programs at the paired district would suffering knowing you face the top 3 and sometimes 4 teams in the class your first round of playoffs no matter how well you do. Public schools used to win the championship regularly. Not a majority of the time but rarely being shutout for 9 years as the current run is. So what happened? Did the green monsters change? No. They still just do what they have done. Glasser has been at X since 1978 and I bet his practices look the same. The green mosters field 100+ freshmen and have starting lines that are almost all seniors. What public school does that?

 

It is the publics that have had their challenges - especially in Jefferson County with desegregation and the current magnet system. I can say that football is not a priority in Fayette where it has the size of schools to compete. But Dunbar has gone through 7 or 8 coaches in 9 years. And state-wide schools that have won are now smaller and no longer in 6A (Shelby County, Christian County).

 

Publics can win again but Jefferson needs to quit playing social experiments with its schools system and Fayette needs to get some focus and support for the sport from its administration. Otherwise it will be up to the Scott Countys and Oldham Countys to make the runs until the major metros get their act together when it comes to this sport.

Regardless of who emerges from round 3 (H, T or X) I think it will be a given that they will have a MUCH easier game in round 4 at least for the forseeable future.

Yeah, the big-school class shuffle throughout history is a classic example of the law of unintended consequences at play.

The biggest change the "super district" may have is that one or two of the better schools in 6A will exit the playoffs earlier - because the bottom two in this district will be heading on the road to face #1 and #2 seeds from the other district in the region!

With all due respect to the other district's in more years then not the bottom 2 in the super district will be better then the top 2 in most other districts and then we'll hear the complaining from the districts that are paired against then in the 1st round that it's not fair they have to play the super district and we'll go back to that extremely "exciting" set up where the first two rounds of the playoffs was against teams from your own district.

With this change, I would still expect Trinity and St. X to be heavy favorites, but I wouldn't count the public schools out completely. Change happens without expecting it and coaching changes are made that can turn things around too. A big example of this is how Cincinnati high school football was before. The GCL division was always considered the best and most competitive hands down until Kerry Combs came to Colerain, which is in the public schools division. Either way, with the way things are now, T and X has the upper hand by far.
