I'm going with my beloved Ragin' Royals! Coach B and the staff have the team running on all cylinders right now. Home field helps too as there should be a great crowd for support. Ah, how quickly a year goes by, and I'm sure the coaches and players remember their dreams of last year's run being stopped short way too early. I'll take the Royals by at least 2 tds! I think it will too. I look for Belfy to win this game because of the experience of there coach being in the playoffs.

I really am looking forward to this game, for one reason these two teams have never met, despite being in the same class. For the last several years I have looked forward to the possibility of meeting up with the Royals in the playoffs, but for one reason or another it has never worked out.

 

Belfry is not the same true wishbone, run it down your throats type of team that they have been in the past. You will not see much true wishbone out of them. They will still run it straight ahead a lot, but they also like to get to the corner and they can throw the ball when needed. Their flexbone is really just a fullback and two wings. They will get one guy in motion and still will run the belly series, triple option and veers out of it, but they do other things too to help them get to the edge. The difference may seem sublte to some but it is definitely new to a lot of the Pirate faithful.

 

Defensively Belfry usually plays pretty well against a passing team. They will always try to take one thing away, and with a passing team, they will normally try to take away the running game and force them to pass. It is a formula that has worked for them against these type of teams. Their weakness has been against those type of teams who have a mobile QB who can spread them out, show pass and then tuck it and run or use the zone-read with a single back and pick a hole. If Mason is this type of team, it may pose big problems for them.

 

Should be a fun week for sure.

Mason's QB, Pawsat, has proven himself to be a capable runner, decent speed and very strong. He's also an excellent passer. Daring Mason to pass will put a smile on their face.

 

Mason generally follows a bend but don't break philosophy on defense, usually a four man front.

 

I expect a close game too.

As a fan of Russell, the team that gets to compete with Mason County for the district title on a yearly basis, I sure hope Mason County steps up this year and wins this game. I know the Royals are excited to get basketball season started, but Round 2 playoff losses at home to Southeastern Kentucky teams are getting old! Pike County Central last year and Sheldon Clark the year before that. Don't let Belfry complete the hat trick. :-)

 

Seriously, though, there is no doubt in my mind that Mason County has the talent to win this game. Belfry will try to rough them up so Mason County will have to be ready play their best game of the season, but Mason's speed and big play ability should prevail. When Mason County played at Russell, they were stricken with what seemed like a slew of holding penalties. Granted, perhaps the refs were looking through maroon colored glasses that game, but whatever the case, that can't happen against Belfry.

 

This should be a good game. I like Big Blue Insanity's prediction, 28-20 Mason County.

Thanks for the positive wishes. I think Mason is more physical than most give them credit for. Watch Troy Chenault run. I suppose what they do on offense with their speed and skills players overshadows that some. Mason doesn't do much ramming it up the middle because they get more production other ways.

If Mason County can contain the Belfry fullback (Willis) then they will win this one. If Willis has some success then look out because Belfry will chew up the clock and try to keep Mason County's big play offense on the sideline. This is a matchup that could go either way, but in the end with the game at Maysville and with the weapons Mason has I think the Royals will pull it out. It will be close, but to many athletes for Pond Creek Nation. I'll say:

Belfry tries to get outside alot more than they did in the past. I can't remember names but one of their RBs is extremely quick.

Pruitt is his name. He is very quick. He will try to get to the corner as much as possible and can make people miss. This will be an interesting matchup when Pruitt gets in space as he tries to use his great athleticism against a Mason County team that is LOADED with athletes. Should be one of the matchups that make this one a great game to watch.
