You don't think attempting to humiliate an opponent no matter what level can have an adverse effect on who wants to schedule you?

 

Here is my answer. If you are so worried about getting humiliated then getter better so you don't. Dale always pulls the reigns back on varsity games. If he didn't over the past few years the Birds could of scored 90 plus on some teams. I kind of think this was a statement game. Maybe to put a little doubt in the back of the Raiders minds of whats to come over the next few years..JMO

The entire bench was cleared. There were boys who played in this game who got very little action the entire year. There was one boy who had not carried the ball all year and ran for a 12 yard gain. They deserve a chance to make a play or score as they work their tail off the entire year. These same kids were on defense as well. So what does that say about the Ryle JV? There was a parent from Ryle screaming for the Birds to take a knee and show some class. The Birds are going to run their offense especially with playing every single kid on the team. Did Ryle put all of their kids in the game? And this was not a statement game. As pointed out in an earlier post the Birds won the first match up 46-7 and that one could have been worse as well. So you can draw your own conclusions. Congratulations to Ryle on hard fought victory Thursday night and best of luck the rest of the season.

I coached youth football for the first time this year and we had a situation where we had the ball with 2 min left and were up one touchdown. I was hoping to get a certain kid who had never reached the endzone an opportunity by running specific plays. As the clock wound down and we got closer I could have called a timeout to get a final play off and thought about it. In fact our Head coach actually tried to call one and the referees (mostly board members) waived it off and told the clock guy to keep running the clock. In the end this was the right decision as you get nothing by humiliating the other team and scoring when you already have the game in hand.

 

I have never been a fan of telling kids to not try or not give 100% when in a game. If that is what the Birds did when the reserves were in there and they ended up scoring then that is fine. But if they were manipulating the clock or running scoring strike plays when up that big then I dont agree. JMO

Were you playing or coaching? From what is being said, there were passes attempted, up by 7 TD's, in a hurry up style offense, with less than 3 min to go. Sounds awfully humiliating considering the birds put forth no effort in that regard.

I'm having a hard time believing that HHS JV team had kids that played very little. Usually HHS has problems getting enough kids on the sidelines for the JV games. Usually frosh are called up to do this. Maybe things have changed in the last couple of years. Were these kids that have seen no time all year frosh?

No. One boy was not in all year for good reason and there are some that get very limited time. They get in but not a lot as there are running clocks and/or close games. There have only been freshman dressed for 2 JV games. I can't recall but I think it was Dixie and a couple of linemen got in at the Scott Co JV game the 2 linemen dressed did not get in. The coaches do work very hard to get everyone in but the quarters are shorter and if you are up and call a time out to get a player in for a play (not taking a knee) the coaches get criticiized. They were not running a hurry up offense. They were letting the clock run down and then running the play.

Hey, I don't have a problem with putting up 61. Just the scenario about playing time you layed out there was different from the few past seasons.

I think the only reason you were seeing pass plays at the end of this game was for a few of the kids who had not played at all during the year. If the perception was "hurry up", it was to get the most plays for these kids they could. Ryle did not play all their kids in this game, so the message speaks both ways. 61-7 is a rough score, but everyone was in on the action. Is it more humiliating to lay down and play dead or play kids that haven't seen the field ? Team is team and if you don't want to get beat, get better, but don't take it out on the institution and coaches if you don't know what you're talking about.

 

...as for the parent screaming for HHS to show some class, I'm guessing he was running the sound system Thursday night and is an AC/DC fan.....

If that was the intent then fair enough. Its probably a little tougher to swallow if your a parent of a Raider.

Therein lies the problem HHS is having scheduling. In "up" years, you can take care of yourself and be competitive (and even win). But in "down" years, history says you can't count on HHS to show any "mercy" on you. (I still remember watching HHS come out of halftime against L-Ville Fern Creek in 2000, up by multiple touchdowns, and kicking an onside kick. I was embarassed)

 

Is it the responsibility of HHS to show "mercy"? Absolutely not. I like to refer to it as a form of sportsmanship.
