When Did CCH and Newport Catholic Play in the GCL?

Featured Replies

Calling all NKY historians. I know Newport Catholic played in the GCL - not sure about CCH. When and why did they play?

Anyone?

I'm pretty sure NewCath was playing in the GCL in the early 60's, Not sure about CovCath. I don't think CovCath started a program untill the late 60's early 70's.

NewCath's final year in the GCL was 1970. I believe that they started playing in '65, I could be wrong on that date.

True on CCH football. What about CCH basketball?

In terms of why??? I know that they lost a few athletes to the GCL schools, so maybe in an efffort to retain them. Maybe b/c they had the numbers to compete, and it was the only Catholic League.

CCH's 1st football team was 1967 I think. Originally, they were not going to let the seniors play because they wanted to build a foundation for the future, but the seniors spoke up and ultimately were permitted to play. CCH's 1st coach was Rasso, I think. He later moved on to Cincy St. X. I believe that they had a winning record that 1st season (I want to say 5-4-1, but not 100% sure on that.)

I don't know how many other NKY schools had football programs at the time. That may have been one reason why they crossed the river. I don't want to speculate on the others, but I'm sure TheOldGuy will chime in. :D

I'll pose the question to Mark Pfeiffer on Saturday. He played on Cov Cath's first football team and has done a pretty decent job following the football Colonels and most all of NKY's football programs ever since. And after all, he is an ICN6 "Northern Kentucky Sports Legend"

I'd guess Theoldguy might be a good reference point as well.

I thought NewCath playing in the GCL had to do with not being elibible for the NKAC championship in the early 60's. For NewCath to play for a League title I think they decided to play in the GCL. They were competitive for the 1st 2 or 3 years. But as Moeller began to emerge, NewCath began to fight Mcknick,La Salle and Purcell for the 2nd tier of the GCL. If you look at their records wins against Moeller, Elder and Roger Bacon are few and far between (if any ) I don't believe they have ever beaten Moeller.

I must say ColonelCrazy, you listened and learned well and of course you are correct in all your answers.

To the best of my knowledge CovCath never played in the GCL and not being able to get enough of the local NKy HS to play NewCath would be my guess for the best reason NewCath was playing in the GCL. I know that CovCath in the early years had a hard time getting some NKy HS teams to play them.

You are correct, Moeller is the only GCL team that Newcath didn't have a win against.

I think NewCath tied one year for first place I think the running back was Ed. Zegler who went on to play for ND. They beat Elder at the pit.

CCH never played in the GCL. Newport Catholic did play in the GCL, before CCH had a team and shortly thereafter. I'm not sure of the years, but it was around 1966-1970. The reason was they could not schedule enough Kentucky schools to qualify for the football state tournament. The NKy athlectic conference (NKAC) would not let private (catholic) schools in their conference and it was not to any public schools advantage to play a team that might beat them. When I played (1967) we only had two local schools on the schedule. We played Boone County and Newport (public), and beat them both, a pretty good feat for a first year team. They had a 2 year contract and after 2 years they would not play us. The next year (1968) CCH actually played a game on Friday night in Berea and another team the next day, Saturday to get enough games. At the time there was only class A, class AA and Class AAA. Class AAA were only in Louisville, it was the Trinity's, St X etc. CCH petitioned the State to allow CCH to play in AAA, but they were denied that opportunity. They struggled for many years to get enough Kentucky teams to play. It wasn't until CCH was terrible that they were allowed in the NKAC. There was a time in the late 70's that CCH would go almost winless.

I remember someone sending a cartoon (circa 1970) to the newspaper that showed a Colonel standing large and proud and the other local mascots hiding behind rocks in fear. It created quite a stir and angered many people. No one knew who did it.

CC please tell that gentlemen, I said HI!

He needs to hang around for a couple more years, so we can both attend the 50th anniversary of Varsity football at CovCath! :thumb:

Funny that this thread is up today. Had a conversation with a NewCath grad today who told me this very thing. He said NewCath would have played in the playoffs that year but since they were a KY school they were not eligible to play in the Ohio High School Playoffs. So Moeller got to go in their place.

Nothing to do with the GCL, but I have a buddy (Mark Krummen) that was apart of the first team that played on Covcath's current field.
