Walter - Any stats to throw at us?

 

Pike came out very hot. We had him at 6-6 to start the game, including a long gain over the middle down the seam to Bobby Leonard on Dixie's first or second play of the game.

 

Pike finished with 215 yards through the air. (Bobby Leonard had 133 of those on 5 receptions)

 

Not sure about any Holmes' stats but I'd assume Peterson had over 100 yards and close to 10 catches. He absolutely torched the Dixie secondary any time he touched the ball. To be fair though, Dixie's secondary also did an outstanding job breaking up several passes to the talented wideout, including one where Bobby Leonard went up on a jump ball with the bigger guy and intercepted it. Charles Knox also had several receptions and over 50 yards receiving along with a INT.

Holmes came to play tonight. They are much improved and will do fine in 4A as the season progresses. There are alot of IFs for the Dixie haters above. IMO if Pike doesnt throw the interception that was returnd to the 1 yd line, this game could have been ugly early. Holmes did a great job of stopping dixie's run early but Dixie clearyly dominated the 4th quarter by running the football.

 

Chickenhawk, how can you say pike's night was average? He played a brilliant first half except for the int.

Score not indicative of the game IMO. 2 late scores we kind of tack ons. A couple of interesting calls against the Bulldogs by the referees. If Holmes would have scored from the 2 yard line to open the second half I believe they would have gone on to win.

I agree. Dixie's defense has turned it up since the second half of the Ryle game. They pitched a shutout in that one in the second half. And the defense didn't play bad against Highlands either. Take away the 3 plays-The interception return and fumble on offense and the kick return on special teams and that game could have went the other way. The special teams played really good last night for Dixie also. Hopefully they can keep it going. In my opinion Leonard definately got the better of Peterson playing corner on him. Peterson did a pretty good job on Cohorn. He still got his catches but he definately had to work a little harder to get open. Jensen was able to run with much of that because his recievers were covered. He's a good QB. Definately doesn't get the attention he deserves

Maybe it was the good job the defense did stopping the drive inside the five. Don't agree with you. I never thought Dixie was going to loose that game. In my opinion, holmes did not utilize their big play guys, Oden and Peterson enough. Maybe that was also due to Dixie's defense.

Even though you're a Dixie hater, give them a little credit. They did what they needed to do, to beat an undefeated Holmes team.

I probably didn't word that real well....meaning some others stepped up and had really good games......very good team effort.

The sophomore is a Dixie player, not a Holmes player.

You do realize that Cohorn was switched to Peterson because Leonard couldn't stop him early, right? Watch the replay of the game. Peterson had 3 or 4 catches on one series alone against Leonard so they switched Cohorn to Peterson.

 

Outside of Lenonard's INT and maybe 2 or 3 pass break ups, nobody in Dixie's secondary did anything to stop Peterson.

The scary thing is, Holmes starts 14 underclassmen this year, one of which is a freshman. Jon Scruggs and Peterson are going to be a lot of fun to watch over the next few years along with Jamonte Wilson who also sees a lot of time as a freshman.

How did Dixie do it?

Cohorn never covered Peterson. Bobby had more yards and most imortantly scored 2TD's and his team won so how can you say Peterson got the best of him . They didn't complete a long pass to Peterson all night. When they tried Leonard knocked it down or intercepted it. Peterson is a great player, but don't make it sound like he ran by Leonard at will . He caught Hitches and got yards after the catch.

Bobby Leonard had 5 receptions, 133 Yds, 2 td receptions, one deflected pass on the goal line, one INT, punt return for 30 yds, and i think a blocked PAT - oh, and one great block that spring the game clinching TD in the fourth quarter.

The scary thing is, Holmes starts 14 underclassmen this year, one of which is a freshman. Jon Scruggs and Peterson are going to be a lot of fun to watch over the next few years along with Jamonte Wilson who also sees a lot of time as a freshman.

 

Good luck with Highlands in their district. Unless they can some how show an enrollment drop and get in 3A.

On thing I did notice tonight is Pike did not play defense until the second half and then he was in there when someone went down for Dixie or when they needed a big pass rush. Good to see that maybe other kids are stepping up on the defensive side of the ball and that they can rest Pike.

 

Very good game I think Dixie was just too big and too strong down the stretch and they did not get worn down in the second half.
