There may not be any or few Fire Marshals on BGP, but there are a lot of individuals here who are heavily involved with workings of high school athletic programs who could provide some answers.

 

 

I will try and find out about GRC this week for you. I do know that the largest crowd they have had was during the playoffs of 1991, either St X or Trinity or maybe both. This was the year before we moved here. GRC won the 4A state that year.

I know it was an issue for the HHS v. Cincinnati St. X game that was played last year at David Cecil Memorial Stadium. The administrators determined the max # and were not permitted to sell any more than that. In fact, I know they had to get the list of the concession stand workers in advance of the game because that # counted against the overall max # of people allowed in the gates. Unfortunately, I don't know what the max # was.

 

To be honest, I think this years Ryle game would rival last years St X. Game. It would be nice to know how many.

Boy, do I remember that game! When George Rogers Clark ran their wing-t, I never could tell who had the ball. But most of all, I still cry in my soup thinking of St. X. being stopped at the 1-yardline at the end of the game, when they were going for the win. :cry:

Was GRC ranked that high that year? I have been told that people were lining up to get in the game, before school let out. How many do you think was at that game?

A few years ago the fire marshals closed the gates at War Memorial when Mayfield was playing Graves. My friend who came to the game late couldn't get in and she had a season ticket.

I recall that happening. I use to know what Mayfield's War Memorial Stadium held but have forgot but next time I am there I will count the section times the number across and down and then guessimate the visitors seating. The stadium is one of the states larger ones as it runs from the back of the end zone to the back of the end zone and is about 35 to 40 rows tall. In addition to the home stands there are bleachers on the visitors side and a large area designed for just tailgaters. According to old reports that are not confirmed, the Mayfield-PT Game has drawn in the 10K range years ago.

If my memory serves me correctly, GRC was ranked in the Top 5 that year, and I think the crowd at the Fairgrounds that year for the St. X./GRC game was around 12,000.

Is there a web site somewhere (maybe somewhere in the KHSAA site) which notes stadium seating capacity? I look forward to seeing your final number, Toothpick. By the way, is the area designed for tailgaters inside the confined stadium area where the tailgaters have to purchase game tickets to enter?

I just had a breakthrough which answers one of my questions. In exploring the KHSAA site, I found that if I click on the directory of member schools, I can click on a school and find out all kinds of good information, including stadium capacity. War Memorial Stadium in Mayfield is listed at 5,000. :jump:

 

The strangest thing I've noted so far in looking at the list is that Southern High School's stadium is 8,500, while Male is only 8,000. I find that hard to believe. :eek:

 

Now that I have a source for stadium seating capacities, I am still looking for answers on what was the largest crowd you know being admitted to your stadium, at what point will they declare it a sellout and stop admitting people, and what criteria is used to establish the number used to close the gates. Still need your help! :confused:

Many of these are obviously approximations or guesstimates (with every capacity-except two- ending with an even 100). I wonder what the margin for error is-----15% (?)------and who supplied this info to your source? Nonetheless, they are indeed interesting.
