What Catholic schools have players from 4 or 5 counties?

Holy Cross had athletes from Kenton, Boone and Campbell county in the early 2000's, and a few from Hamilton County in Ohio that played, but agree-don't think it was a pertinent question.

I think that CCH gets some students from Grant County.

Dale is really good in interviews at saying the right thing.

Give me Tom Stellman any day.

AGREED!

I liked the slam on the 5A programs. While I'm sure that was not his intention, he basically said he'll have better competition in 4A than he does in 5A.

BTW...that was my question

He's probably right. The new 4A will be loaded.

Dale is good in interviews because he's sincere. He doesn't have to stay "on-message" because what he says is what he believes. Now, does he stretch it a bit in his preseason assessments of his teams? Sure, but that's who Dale is - positive, goal-oriented, always looking for the good in those around him. He didn't say those things about Coach Weinrich because that's what's expected of head coaches to say about their subordinates, he said it because he believes it to be true, and because he believes it to be ultimately what's most important. When I read the quote about his Mom it didn't surprise me at all. Dale is not your average football coach, and it continues to baffle me why so many coaches (especially youth coaches) continue to ignore the obviously successful example he has set in favor of the old-school demeaning methods.

Dale is really good in interviews at saying the right thing.

Would you prefer he say the wrong thing?!?!?

I thought Coach Mueller's answers the all the questions posed to him were outstanding. While some may say he gave nothing but canned answers, I believe he actually gave some answers that surprised me a bit. For instance, I would have thought Coach Mueller would have said that playing against Withrow (a program he previously coached) is a great thing, but instead he talked candidly about how it's uncomfortable for him to go up against a program of which he is so fond. Also, I was surprised at his answer to the question about playing in a cross-river showdown event held at some place like Nippert or PBS. He indicated he thought it was better to play at home. Given some of the events Coach Mueller has involved Highlands in over the years, I would have guessed he really liked playing in the high-profile venues, especially since he has talked more about HHS being viewed as a regional/national power recently.

I would never prefer any venue other than MY HOME FIELD. I played at Galbraith Field, Nippert Stadium and Louisville Cardinal Stadium over the course of my high school football career, and I'll readily admit that the high-profile venue aspect wasn't anything but distracting (and yes, I know Galbraith wasn't much of a high-profile venue, but it still seemed that way all the same). When I was playing at home, I was just more comfortable in the familiar environment.

Give me my home field advantage over a high-profile venue any day.

"Right" as in non-controversial. Coach speak.

Highlights from today's chat with Coach Dale Mueller on Cincinnati.com

Q. I have to say the conditioning program at Highlands is one of the best that I have seen. When did you implement this to the Highlands program.

A. We've been doing the same basic program for the last 18 years but each year we try to improve it. And I do have to say it is going better now than it ever has.

Q. Do you think 6 classes is to many for football in the state of KY?

A. I have thought that having six classes is too many but the commissioner of the KHSSA Julian Tackett said that more guys in Kentucky are now playing high school football - and credits it somewhat to getting six classes. If that's getting more guys to play football, Im all for it.

Q. Coach, the Moeller crusaders are squaring off against two Kentucky powerhouses Trinity and Louisville St. X. Any comments on who will win?

A. Those are three great teams. I don't know a lot about what all they have coming back. Those are games I'd pay to watch

Q. Hi Dale, congrats on another State Championship! Can you talk about the upcoming schedule? Congrats to Towles and Bruns on D1! commits to UK and UC! Can you speak abou the success of your younger teams I know the Frosh were excellent last season going undeleated and showing a lot of players to get to know and get excited about...Speed Kills! Go Birds!

A. Thank you! We're real excited about Patrick and Drake committing and expect to have more guys sign D1 scholarships before the year is out. The freshman and JV both undefeated last year - and those guys have really looked great in our offseason spring football this year.

Q. Will your team go undefeated this season?

A. That's always the goal. We open up playing Boyle Co. who's always good. We play some quality teams like CovCath, Elder at the Pit and Ryle. We hope to but have a lot of tough teams on the schedule.

Q. Do schools who accept tuition students have an advantage over those that do not?

A. Yes

Q. You always speak so highly of your players, can you name a few local players thet went to others schools that you would have loved to have a chance to coach at HHS?

A. Absolutely. This year the Highlands coaches are coaching the NKY East squad. We're going to coach those guys this year. Im really looking forward to it. It's like Christmas coming in the spring. Kremarr Campbell Co., Brown from Newport - the QBs of the team, Connelly from CovCath, Leonard from Dixie - the WR. I'm looking forward to coaching all the other guys too. Sometimes we all think of ourselves in are own little towns and schools and think we're all against each other. But really we're all trying to help young guys get a positive educational experience.

Q. Do you have any regrets as a coach?

A. Absolutely. Most every day I go home and say, 'Gosh, I could have done that better or should have done that differently.' Perhaps sometimes I spend too much time at school. I think anyone who examines their life see areas they should have changed.

Q. How do you feel about people who accuse HHS of recruiting football players?

A. We are not recruiting football players. We have a great academic and athletic program in addition to music, theater and a lot of other programs. People make choices where they want to live and send their sons and daughters to school.

Q. When will HHS move to Class 6A? Many feel HHS would continue to dominate.

A. In KY, you are allowed to move up Classes for geographical reasons only. So since there are other 4A teams in the area, we are not presently allowed to move up from 4A.

Q. I hear Winton Woods will have a terrific team next year. Any plans to try and play them? (Game or scrimmage)

A. We've been trying to schedule a game with Winton Woods but haven't been able to work it out.

Q. When was the last time you played another team from Campbell County?

A. I think it would have been Campbell Co. about six years ago.

Q. Can you elaborate on the comment that schools that charge tuition have an advantage?

A. I didn't me to say you have an advantage if you charge tuition. I thought the question was schools who accept tuition students have an advantage. Schools who can accept tuition students in my opinion have an advantage.

Q. If Highlands closed tomorrow, and everything school in the country asked you to coach their team next year, where would you go?

A. I'd go back to Withrow and be an assistant for Doc Gamble.

Q. Comment From Adam

Why does Highlands schedule two games against Ryle instead of scheduling S.K. ?

A. We have great difficulty scheduling. In general, we schedule anyone who says yes, we will play you. Ryle agreed to play us twice each of the last two seasons which really appreciate. Basically, if anyone says yes to us, we will schedule them.

Q. Coach, who are you counting on to step up this year to get you back to the state championship?

A. We are counting on all 85 of our guys to get us back to the state championship this year. I have been so incredibly impressed on how hard these guys have tried and how coachable they are being.

Q. Can you describe your last meeting at the Pitt and their fans??

A. The Pit is one of my favorite places to play because the Elder players are so good and well coached and the fans are so supportive. It wasn't the perfect experience because we lost.

Q. Coach, do you think you will ever play Trinity in a regular season matchup?

A. Right now we are scrimmaging them. It's so beneficial for each team, we don't have a plan for stopping that. I'm sure there will be another Highlands-Trinity game in the future.

Q. Do you play Ryle this year...how good to do think they will be?

A. I think Ryle will be one of the Top 5 teams in the state. They have a great 3-year starting running back and they are into football at Ryle.

Q. I did not go to Highlands but I had some mutual friends with your daughter. She was always so cute, is she single?

A. I have two cute daughters. One is married with a daughter and the other has a great long-term boyfriend, so I think you might be out of luck!

Q. What were your thoughts on Mr Eddie Eviston leading NewCath the another State title in his first year as a head coach?

A. Coach Eviston is doing an outstanding job at NCC. He's an excellent football coach and a great guy.

Q. I am sure Moeller and St. Xavier would welcome playing you every year. Those schools need local schools to play them on a regular basis.

A. I appreciate your comment but it is just not as easy as it seems for KY and OH teams to find weeks to play each other.

Q. Have you gone over to watch the NKY Rivermonsters yet?

A. Absolutely. Jared Lorenzen is still the fastest-thinking football player I have ever seen and can make plays.

Q. Any thoughts of become a college coach?

A. No, I love being a high school coach.

Q. I know the Birds are full of tradition, but any thought on changing the uniforms?

A. No, we really like our uniforms and don't want to go to the expense of getting rid of all those and buying all new ones.

Q. Coach, Congratulations on your success. the Highlands program is always fun to watch. Was the Ryle game at the end of the season last year one of the most physical games you have coached in recently?

A. The Ryle game was a physical game but I would have to say Withrow and Cincinnati St. X were also very comparable.

Q. What do you think of the QB at Dixie?

A. I think Zeke Pike is an excellent football player and I'm looking forward to watching his career continue at Auburn.

Q. Where should the state title games be played that is fair to all?

A. Life ain't fair. Nothing is perfectly fair for everybody but I think the KHSSA made an excellent decision playing them in Bowling Green. It's a great atmosphere for a high school championship game.

Q. Does the state of KY have spring football....do you think it is an advantage?

A. Yes and yes. We get 10 days of full pads in the spring in Kentucky and it is a tremendous help in guys becoming better football players and your team becoming a better football team.

Q. How do other sports influence your football players. Do you encourage them to play baseball basketball, etc?

A. Absolutely. Playing multiple sports dramatically helps you become a better athlete. Most of the Highlands football players play another sport.

Q. What are your thoughts on Bob Schneider?

A. Bob has made a tremendous, positive impact on thousands of people in his educational career and I have the utmost respect for him.

Q. What teams do you see as your biggest rivals and why?

A. Covington Catholic. They are in our district and are No. 1 competition to win our district.

So SK said NO, guess that ends that debate on who is ducking who.
