I was watching Karl Rove on Cavuto today and he said that unlike President Obama , President Bush did not go around complaining about the economy he inherited from President Clinton.

 

I guess 1999 was too long ago to remember. Was the economy bad when President Bush took over in 2000?

The Dot Com bubble had burst (officially the date of the burst was 3/10/2000, but everyone knew that the paper was insupportable, and the December 1999 selloff triggered the collapse three months later). The recession was regionalized but very bad in many areas. Not as bad as Obama, but Rove is correct that Bush did not spend a lot of time complaining.

He's saying that after 9/11 Bush couldn't complain about what he was handed. Of course I sure don't remember him complaining the first 9 months either. But I guess complaining and blaming the previous President over a year and half later works for some Presidents.

Of coarse he could have complained and he had plenty of time to. It just seems he looked for a way to fix the problem, whether you agree with them or not, instead of point fingers every time he got in front of a camera.

The economic "crisis" then was nothing compared to what it was now. Couple that with Bush starting two wars and the economy was really put on the backburner during his terms in office. And listen, I'm not a Bush basher. I think he was dealt a pretty raw hand in terms of events during his presidency. I think he made a lot of mistakes in office, but in general terms, he wasn't a monster like some want you to believe.

 

Bush inherited a budget surplus and effectively squandered in on wars. But the dotcom bubble had collapsed, to his credit. The economy wasn't in great shape, but Bush had much less to complain about than Obama.
