They donate equipment to the organization through their foundation. Braves president and former general manager John Schuerholz sent his son, Jonathan, to play at East Cobb. Atlanta's scouts regularly attend tournaments and workouts there. "We started really concentrating on East Cobb about 10 years ago," Schuerholz says. "We said, 'This is one of the top amateur programs in the country. Let's make sure we're at the forefront of culling talent out of our own backyard.' We were able to do that for a few years. And all things being equal, we may take the East Cobb player over another player if only because we see them so much and know them so well." Eugene Heyward believes he knows why other teams were not as high on his son as the Braves: Baldwin and the team quietly downplayed his ability and visibility. They sandbagged the competition. July 31, 201016 yr I remember reading that article. However, I don't see any "shady" aspect. IMO they didn't cheat, but it was shady. They told him if he hit for the Marlins they would draft him. There was some issues w/ health records of another Atlanta kid. It's shady to me, but also smart. Other teams know about it too so it is their fault in a way.

Bruce shouldn't have hit in that spot. Exactly. That's why Dusty would have had to use up two bench players if he had pinch hit Cairo. That's why the smarter move would have been to pinch hit Heisey. You never know how many innings a game like that might go.

Agreed, but if Cairo puts the ball in play they would have been in a save situation and I think he's a btter candidate for contact than Hesiey. Either way Bruce shouldn't have faced that pitcher.
