Football has come a long way in the 14 years I have been following it in Kentucky.

 

I have really started wondering why someone has not came up with a magazine soley for football and other high school sports.

 

I can remember at one point in time Ohio, Indiana and Michigan having one that was above average.

Sounds like a great business venture for you, you know, and care about, high school football. Put your knowledge and passion to work. I am sure it would be well received among the fans, players, and parents of Kentucky High School sports.

I would like to see a nice preview magazine, ala the Dave Campbell magazine in Texas. In all honesty, the BGP class previews that come around each August would be a great provider of the information. It would be nice to include a few other bits of information into a magazine form. But who would do it?!

There used to be a free high school sports magazine in NKY that went nowhere. BGP would make it tough as well.

Now that you mention it, this would be something I would like to start up at some point in the future. I am currently (on the Van Wilder plan....lol) a student at Northern Kentucky University and I'm almost finished with a Journalism major and this would be a perfect thing to do to get my feet wet...of course I would have to wait until I graduate because I highly doubt people with the money for ad space would be forthcoming to someone who doesn't have some kind of established background in the field. I am hopefully going to graduate in the spring so I guess I could use that time to make some contacts with folks in the know and see what it would take to start up something like this.

I've got some money for investments. Tell me why it would be wise for me to invest in a NKY high school football magazine. Who is your market? What would the content consist of that a)we care about and b)don't already have access to?

If you were aiming that towards me, I am not sure...I saw the thread and a virtual light bulb just clicked on in my head. IF I would be able to start up a high school sports magazine, I would try to make it a statewide mag but if I had to, I would start out with a regional based magazine to establish the brand. I do have some people in mind who I would contact about doing freelance work but that would be way down the road. Let me think about this for a day or so and get back to you because I wouldn't want to sound like someone who hasn't done research on the topic.

In reality, it would likely be better if a current publication such as the Cats Pause produced a separate magazine focusing just on high school football. They don't cover high school sports, however, so they would have to rely on area writers to produce larger articles than those currently found in the Kentucky Football Yearbook. That would probably end up costing much more than they can afford to pay. And Clyde, you are probably right in the fact that it would likely have a limited appeal, especially in competition with the high quality on-line preview that BGP does.

 

So it probably wouldn't work, although it would be pretty cool to have one!

I'm asking the questions that have to be asked by anyone who thinks it would be a good business to put money into.

 

 

Lets say you put a running back from Belfry on the cover of your statewide magazine.

How many people outside of two counties in EKY are likely to a)notice it on the mag rack and b)pick it up and plunk down money for it?

Magazines - and practically all print media - simply don't have the niche they used to. Longtime national magazines with readership in the hundreds of thousands are going under every year. Major newspapers are turning out daily publications that look more like pamphlets. A KY HS magazine would have an extremely limited readership, struggle to produce cost-efficient numbers of copies that are interesting to people in all areas, and have to deal with the likelihood of rapid turnover of its subscribers.

 

I would love to help be a part of something like this, but I don't think it's economically feasible in print. Now on the internet...? Perhaps an internet magazine could be made to work, but I think it would work best tied to an existing platform (i.e., BGP)....hmmm...

A couple of thoughts:

A) It sounds like this thread is leading somewhere, like an announcement to something? But what the heck do I know.

B) There's a reason that at one point in time Ohio, etc. had one and they don't anymore.

Color covers cost a fortune. No way you could do multiple covers.

 

And, I hate to rain on anyone's parade, so please don't take this personally. But, printing and ink costs would just crush any chance at a print magazine with such a small niche. It is nice to see folks with a passion for the subject, and the zest to try to make it work though.

I think this is a great idea. I believe online is the only viable option.

 

Here is how I think it could work. If someone developed a template including font type, margin etc. ( Someone with an interest in journalism, perhaps a student hint hin hint) Included would be a consistent summary of each school. For example: Offensive System, Key players returning players with a couple quotes from players and/or coaches. Do the same thing for the defense and Special teams. Perhaps one or two "human" interest stories about each program. Could be about a member of the coaching staff, or a kid that has overcome an injury or a kid receiving college looks etc. The template could leave room for 2 or 3 pictures from the school. Each School would end up with a 2 1/2 or 3 page summary of the coming year.

 

The key is to get a fan from each school to be responsible for gathering the information and submitting the data in the Standard template.

 

The result would be a very nice summary of each program. If a few select "editors" wanted to give their predictions about each distract race that would be great as well.

 

I know its easier said than done, but I think that is possible. Perhaps the way to get something like this going is to start small. Perhaps with a region, or even a specific District like 6A in NKY or Louisville.
