June 23, 201016 yr The mystery guitarist thread triggered an interesting discussion idea...who is the best three man band in rock and roll history? ZZ Top, Cream and Rush were mentioned in the thread. What say you? Who else?
June 23, 201016 yr Nirvana is way up the list. Uncle Tupelo would be one that is very overlooked, as is Govt. Mule and North Mississippi All-Stars. Edited June 23, 201016 yr by Jim Schue
June 23, 201016 yr If we look at 3-piece meaning only 3 members OR only 3 playing instruments with a singer, it changes the landscape quite a bit. I will go with 3 members. I am not necessarily ranking these in order, just trying to keep up with how many I think would be in the upper echelon of 3 piece bands. 1. Cream was really the forerunner of the rock 3 piece band. 2. Rush had a very unique sound 3. Nirvana did usher in a new genre with their grunge sound 4. ZZ Top, southern rock with that Texas twang and so wound up in the blues they were/are solid 5. Jimi Hendrix Experience (nuf said) 6. Buddy Holly and the Crickets (rock and roll legends) 7. Greenday (punk with pop/rock leanings) 8. Grand Funk Railroad (morphed into 4 piece later on, but started as a 3 piece) 9. Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble 10. The Police 11. ELP 12. Triumph 13. Kings X 14. Zebra
June 23, 201016 yr Good thread :thumb: Buddy Holly & The Crickets Cream The Jimi Hendrix Experience ZZ Top RUSH Nirvana Uncle Tupelo (Good call, Jim) Dinosaur Jr.
June 23, 201016 yr In no particular order: Grand Funk Railroad and The Rory Gallagher band, while they were still a three piece. Robin Trower Band Hot Tuna The Police, until they got overly popular. ELP Rush Jimi Hendrix Experience ZZ Top Cream
June 23, 201016 yr 1. Nirvana 2. Everyone else. Nirvana and all of these bands really owe their very existence to Cream and Hendrix.
June 23, 201016 yr Nirvana and all of these bands really owe their very existence to Cream and Hendrix. My best recollection (take it for what it's worth) is that Cream was the first of the mainstream power trios.
June 23, 201016 yr Nirvana and all of these bands really owe their very existence to Cream and Hendrix.Michael Jordan owes his existence to James Naismith--doesn't mean Jordan isn't better.
June 24, 201016 yr Author Some of my personal favorites would be... Rush Jimi Hendrix Experience Nirvana ZZ Top Buddy Holly & The Crickets James Gang Primus And, a few more that haven't been mentioned, that I deem noteworthy... Meat Puppets Violent Femmes Motorhead
