George Rogers Clark to play in Beach Ball Classic

Featured Replies

GRC will play in the Beach Ball Classic Dec. 27-31. There will be live feeds on the internet, that I will post at a later time. Also Scouts and Rivals will be covering the tourney.

Below is some information I found out about the tourney.

The Beach Ball Classic started in 1981 and for the last 17+ years has been ranked as the #1 High School Basketball holiday tournament in America. The Beach Ball Classic committee does a great job of selecting the best basketball teams and players from all over the country to participate in the tourney. 16 teams are invited to vie for the coveted championship trophy at Myrtle Beach South Carolina.

That's a big honor for GRC, especially with it being a county school in Kentucky. Might be and probably leaving somebody out but off the top of my head of Kentucky county schools that have been invited Elliott County 09 and Clay County multiple times in the late 80's come to mind.

Yes it a big honor to be invited to this tourney. Others I know of who played in the tourney are, Scott Co and UHA, who won the tourney in the 90's.

Tates Creek in 90-91 (year they were state runner-up). Great teams and players in the tournament year after year.

Hasn't Scott Co played in the past two?

Clay was there in '88 and '92 for certain.

Oddly enough, the year UH won the BB Classic in 95, the only Kentucky team to ever win it they didn't even win the Kentucky All 'A' Classic. Great semifinal game that they lost that year.

Scott County has been in it several times. Their best finish was this past year, they finished fourth. I believe the people who put on the tournament like to have a Kentucky team in it. It is the second most prestegious holiday tournament behind the City of Palms.

So GRC is playing is this tourney as well as Toyota Classic and Fayette Inv.?

Wonder how the break down of expenses goes for a tourney like that? I would assume you would have to at least take a charter bus becuase in no way would a standard bus be enjoyable that far away. Is there a Beach Ball Classic committee who helps or picks up a tab for this and all expenses?

That is what the schedule says that I have.

Not sure, maybe some Elliott Co or Scott Co fans can enlighten us as both their teams has been there lately. As big a tourney as this is and teams coming from all over the country I would say some of thier expenses would be covered. Just as the 5/3 does in their tourney.

I am sure we will take a charter bus, we take one to the regional tourney every year.

I would assume rooms are paid for and probably a lump sum up front for travel and maybe discounted meals, maybe some free.

Brackets just game out yesterday for the Beachball Classic. GRC will play Tuesday Dec. 28th at 8:45 against The Boys & Girls team of NY.

IN USA Today they have The Boys & Girls team ranked 19th nationally.

Here is what is says about them:

19. Boys and Girls,

Brooklyn, N.Y.

Four starters return from a state runner-up, including a solid backcourt in Michael Taylor (16.7 ppg, 7.0 rpg), a Queens, N.Y.

Here is a article on the team winning the state title last year.

Here is a link to the Beachball Classic site where you can listen/watch the games. You don't have to log in just click on schedule to the left for webcasts. Most of the teams rosters and about them are up too. Just click on teams, then each team has its own link.

Always a great tournament, all the 1st round games are broadcast online. Looking forward to watching.

After the 1st round, only the winner's bracket games are broadcast. I believe the consolotation bracket games are still updated via gametracker or something of that sort.

Rice, NY is also in this in upper bracket. They're always a very good program. They're led this year by 6'4 G Jermaine Sanders, who is committed to Cincinnati.
