Playing at St X and Trinity, and now Scott Co. might get turf. What are the best cleats for the turf?

just regular rubber or screw in cleats.

I prefer the molded cleats on the turf fields. Especially for practice, I think they are easier on the kids feet.

 

On the newer fields SK and Ryle the screw in cleats are fine. On the older surfaces like Highlands and CovCath, I don't like the screw in cleats, and the way the grab the turf.

One quick addition to the screw in cleats... some of them have metal tips on the bottom of the plastic, make sure that you replace them with all plastic. Our kids say that the metal is slippery and they can't always get good footing.

I always just wore regular cleats and didn't have any problems with them.

Good point. I always thought this as well :thumb:.

There is nothing like metal tipped cleats. They just grab the ground better. The plastic tips are lighter but can slip slightly because they do not have as good of a grip.

Maybe on grass but not on field turf; from what the kids and the shoe reps say, it is just the opposite.

I was always partial to the screw in for games and the molded in practice. If you are playing at ST. X & Trinity I am afraid it might not matter what types of cleats you use.

Which shoe reps? I am talking from personal experience. Plastic spikes just don't dig in that well, especially in the rain.

Would be just like tires on your car- best would be for each player to decide- big heavy lineman and scat back would not have same requirement-old turf/new turf- wet turf/dry turf- grass all would be different.

Rule 13

I think plumber1 has the best advice. My son has shoes with 3 different screw in cleat lengths and changes them just like he said, depending on grass/turf old turf/new and wet/dry.
