May 26, 201016 yr Science was never my strong suit so I must ask. Are there controversial issues in chemistry and physics? Carbon dating in chemistry. Many people debate it because it is the technique used to date the age of the earth to 4.6 billion years. Physics would be formation of the universe aka big bang theory. This is sometimes taught under earth/space science.
May 26, 201016 yr People are way too sensitive. Not sure if I agree. Or at least my father-in-law would not agree. Because the Klan brings back thoughts of the day the Klan killed his father in Columbia Alabama when he was 9 years old. I guess this Sunday while we are eating Sunday dinner, I will just tell him to get over it. You are to sensitive old man. So do you think it is okay to go to a school in New York dress up like terrorist and pretend to take down the twin towers? Then tell everyone to get over it because they are too sensitive.

So then by your logic we shouldn't let anyone into NY in Muslim garb?
May 27, 201016 yr Do you really think your scenarios are equivalent to the school lesson in question? The point I am trying to make, it is tough to say people are to sensitive when we haven't walked in everyones shoes.
May 27, 201016 yr So then by your logic we shouldn't let anyone into NY in Muslim garb? Didn't say that. I am saying folks that are effective by such groups should be called TOO sensitive. No matter how many years it takes.
May 27, 201016 yr Didn't say that. I am saying folks that are effective by such groups should be called TOO sensitive. No matter how many years it takes. And I don't think anyone said that someone who has had issues with the Klan shouldn't feel revulsion, outrage and all manner of negative emotion by the sight of it. I've never had personal dealings with the Klan other then a membership drive in my neighborhood in 1975 in response to court ordered busing in Jefferson County and I have a very visceral and negative reaction when I see Klan garb. But I have absolutely no problem with Klan garb being used in a responsible fashion as a teaching tool. If this is not done because someone may feel revulsion or fear because of it then the same should apply to ANY garb that could elicit that response.
May 27, 201016 yr let them wear it. It may show we are taking rights away from racist, we are not allowed to do that. May be sued for freedom of wear.
May 27, 201016 yr So was the movie "A Time To Kill" wrong in having people dress up like clan members, even if it exposed the group for their practices of evil & hatred? I do agree that the teacher should have alerted administration officials as to what was being planned, especially since some of these students were going to be on school grounds while filming. If I'm a student walking around the halls/campus, and I see someone dressed up like that, my initial reaction will be one similar to those who are upset. So long as the film depicted the KKK for who they are, I have no problem with the idea.
May 27, 201016 yr Its not that simple. There's a line you can't cross and the question is where it begins. This goes to my posts in the other threads where it talked about teaching history with the views of different cultures. The class there was Hispanics in the Vietnam War and many on here defended teaching culture viewpoints of historical times in this country. My point then was who is going to make the determination of whose view the students should learn from. This is an example of where I think that is a mistake.
May 27, 201016 yr Science was never my strong suit so I must ask. Are there controversial issues in chemistry and physics? Teaching of creationism as a theory, same way that Big Bang is a Theory.
May 27, 201016 yr Author Teaching of creationism as a theory, same way that Big Bang is a Theory. Again...and adamently, NO. A scientific theory is based on evidence. Most misunderstand the word "theory" and use the more colloquial definion of it. "Hmmm...my tire is flat. I must have ran over some glass on the way to work this morning." That is the colloquial use of "theory." You have no evidence. It is essentially a supposition. There is no evidence that supports creationism. It is not a topic for a science class.
