I don't know who has applied other than Combs, Marcum & Parks. I've been hearing that they have received around ten applications.

Just 10 applications for this job - that's surprisingly low.

Then whats the deal? Seems to me they would be getting apps from all across the state? Is this not the same type job it used to be? Its says something Spurlock would leave for Sheldon Clark.

Just what kind of job did it used to be???

When Richie & Russ were there along with Russ Chadwell there was some talent... but no McDonald's All Americans. Chadwell didn't even play much on the varsity level until his junior year. In '90, you had Collins, Blair, & T. Gray as seniors & Marcum and Smith as sophomores. They were all "home grown" and went to the final four where they lost to Louisville Fairdale by about 10. Fairdale was loaded with Maurice Morris, Jermaine Brown(Darrell Griffith's son) and Carlos Turner(6'6" PG). If not for Fairdale, Clay would have had a good chance at the title that year. Fairdale won the title again the next year. That was 20 years ago and the program has been on a steady decline since for various reasons... but the history is still there. With a little bit of success, the fan support and backing from the community would be right back. I like to compare it to the UK program. Anything less than the Sweet 16 IS a failure at Clay Co. 20 wins and a district championship just doesn't cut it... and rightfully so. That's what kind of program it used to be. People didn't realize what Coach Keith did with not-so-great talent and became accustomed to not only going to the Sweet 16, but usually winning at least a game or two there.

Coach Keith is the reason Clay isn't getting a ton of interest for this job. Coach Keith was a great coach but his time as Clay's head basketball coach is over, his health won't allow him to do it. But a lot of the community there still won't him to be the coach, and Coach Keith himself still try's to be the coach in a round about way and it makes it very hard for whom ever the actual coach is, to do their job.

Well Stated; I think that the people of Clay kind of refuse to see it that way. Had the "Coach" moved on or took a less public stance at games, and threw his support to the program no matter who the coach they may have gotten of few more applicants.

Combs looks to be the man for the job. I have heard he is in the school system and has the best chance at this job. Marcum will still be assistant.

I heard over the weekend it was between Marcum and Combs also. Looks like my prediction of Coach Keith coming back will not come true.

Are you guys from Clay County? Do you attend Clay County games on a regular basis? I sit next to coach Keith at almost every game and other than one or two times he has been quite the normal fan. Although at times he doesn't understand what coaches/players are doing, he is supportive for the most part. Since you guys are so close to the program and coach Keith, maybe you can elaborate. Since he is who he is, does that mean he needs to keep his mouth shut? Could it be due to the success he had as a coach be the reason the job is tough?

By the way...It's looking more and more like Steve Wright will be the next coach at Clay.

Unless SL gives him more money like they did when he was going to take the GRC job some years back.

The only way that Clay could get Wright is to make him a very SWEET deal. He has a good deal at SL, but if Clay makes an even better offer, I am not sure what South could offer. Wright already has the best deal of any coach in any sport for either of the Laurel County schools. I don't see it happening, but I have been wrong before.

I would compare coaching in Clay County to Coaching UK. They have a great fan base that are all coaches from their perspective. The dynasty that Coach Keith built there was great however it will not be that way agian. To many other schools put emphasis on basketball, ecspecially in the mountains and the 13th region. It will be difficult to find a coach that will fulfill the dreams of the people of Clay County. As for the people who say Coach Keith is to involved, I say that is resume allows him to do that.
