Who will be the new coach at Clay County?

Featured Replies

Can't list them all on here or in a PM, but here are a few.

1. He has a sweet deal at SL. Isn't in the classroom, makes good money, has been there a long time. It would take a pretty sweet deal for him to leave and I am not sure Clay could/would give that to him.

2. He defines the South Laurel program having been the only coach at SL. He was the coach at Laurel County before it became SL, but since it became SL in 1992, he has been living in noone's shadow. Granted that Laurel Co did win the 1981 state title, the full credit for that was not given to Coach Broughton, but Paul Andrews, Joe Karr and a stellar cast of solid players around them. Not too many years later, Broughton moved on and away from Laurel County. Bobby Keith is still there and casts a long shadow in Clay County. A coach who has done what Wright has done would probably not want to step out of his own shadow into someone elses. Real or not, that is the perception from many.

Granted, it would not shock me to see Coach Wright leave after this past season. He loses a lot of talent, will have a young team next year, his son Eric graduated and a change would not be totally unexpected. IF he leaves (I am not saying it will happen), I just don't see it being Clay County.

I don't see it either.

Anybody seen Billy Hicks lately...lol. :sssh:

Rumor has it that Robert Marcum(former player and 1992 graduate) has been offered the job. Not sure if he has accepted the job or not.

It's not going to be a big name, the word out of clay county is that whom ever is hired as coach will have to be a classroom teacher and will not recieve extended days. The new coach will recieve teaching pay and an $8000 stipend. So Wright, Hicks and maybe Booher (not for sure what he does at SV) are not going to take a pay cut or want to go back to the classroom just to coach at CC.

I don't think that is true, since that haven't conducted interviews yet.

Interesting. Pretty good head coaching pay though but I think that you are right probably won't get a big name coach then if this is true.

Rick Barnes has taken his name out of it too.

If Hicks cant win with an all state team every year at Scott Co, what makes you think he would go to Clay?

He would win big at Clay Co. Hes been a great coach every where hes coached at. If he were at Clay Co. you could expect to see him in the Sweet 16 on a fairly regular basis.

Hicks should have won multiple state titles by now. He does less with more than just about anyone I've ever seen. He's like Dean Smith - all the talent in the world, but finds a way to underachieve.

I see you don't know what you are talking about. He had great talent the last 2 years. In 09 1st team all stater Richie Phares tore his ACL going in the regional semifinal and lost by 1 in the final. This year they got beat in the state semifinal. In 07 they won a state title and went undefeated in the state of Kentucky. In 04 they made it to the Final 4 with a team that had no big college prospects except for a young Jared Carter. Then from 98 to 00 they won a state title, finished runner up, and made it to the final 4. Your judging his whole coaching career on the last 2 seasons when a bad break in 09 helped keep them from a Sweet 16 appearance and this year they made it to Saturday morning.

I think it would be good for Billy to get out of Georgetown get back to the mountains and make a 5-6 year end of career run at Clay County. He just needs to get his batteries charged back up and leave all the trouble behind. He has always said he will retire in the mountains and I think he would have left years ago but Mrs. Hicks kinda likes the convenience of Georgetown with the closeness to Lexington.

Probably big cut in pay too. If his wife loves teh stuff to do in G-ton and closeness of Lex and Cinn. Then there is no way she moves to Clay. Nothing to do there and have to drive just to get to interstate and civilization

 What trouble. Hes got a great program and does a great job at Scott Co.

I suspect he was referring to the controversy ...
