Don't know about too many boys teams but Cov Cath certainly gas more numbers than last year. Heard over 120 boys signed up this year. Guess they want to see if they can get a ring!! Personally I think they have a great chance to repeat as 2A state champs. So far I think they have 2 second place finishes in a couple strong meets across the river. (Lasalle and Trotwood Madison)

Ryle seems to have endless amounts of track team members! I dont know how good they are yet, but there certainly seems to be enough interest. Nice facility there as well.

I imagine NCC and St. Henry will be the usual tough contenders.

Beechwood has 50 girls on their team this year, mostly junior high. This is the largest team they have had so far. There is also talk of adding boys' track next year. Hopefully this will help us to be more competetive a few years down the road.

That would be good!

"Word on the street" ... is that this was just approved at the end of last week (for 2011).

I wonder who will head up the program? It would definitely be a very interesting situation. My thought is that there would be a good chance that the Beechwood boys team would be very successful right away. It would be hard to develop the distance aspect of things--but I am sure that there are boys there who can figure it out.

I think it will be great. I also think more girls will consider track if there are boys running (hate to admit this, but I think it is true). I think the program with be very successful and we may even have a chance to win some meets. I just wish we had a real track to practice on.

I believe the current girls' coach is retiring after this year, so there may be a whole new coaching team.

Distance is a problem for our girls as well as boys. At track meets, you can certainly tell who has cross country running. It makes a huge difference in those long races.

I am sorry that my youngest is going to graduate this year.

Good points. Interesting that you bring up the distance aspect. Cross Country does play a big part .... but .... the right coach can get that on track a lot easier than sprints.

Naturally .. I am interested to see who ends up in the drivers seat at Beechwood.

As far as track in NKY ....

Campbell County Girls and Boys are probably the best overall program right now.

Dixie usually has good sprints.

Conner Boys have the best distance team

Cov Cath is very strong.

Simon Kenton has really improved lately.

Ryle and Notre Dame have both been strong on the girls side as of late

At this point ... it is a real toss up. A lot can happen (and will happen).

You might be able to say the bolded for the girls, but for the boys, based on the below results from last Saturday's meet at Trotwood Madison, I do not think you can say it:

Men - Team Rankings - 14 Events Scored

===============================================================================

1) Whitmer 87 2) Trotwood-Madison 80

2) Covington Catholic 80 4) Campbell Co. 48.50

5) Withrow 38 6) Hamilton 30

7) Middletown 28 8) Belmont 13

9) Wayne High School 10 10) Aiken 4

11) Ponitz 2.50 12) Woodward High School 2

I think that as the year plays out ... and Campbell County is at full strength .... you will see where I am coming from.

Campbell County has one kid who has the ability to score 36 to 40 points a meet ... as well as a lot of depth across the board. (And I am definitely NOT a Campbell County fan). I actually hope that I am wrong about my predictions for more reasons than one!

Cov Cath is definitely a great program ... but there are some some weaknesses (more so than in the past). There are still many strengths .. so they will be tough to overcome.

Either way ... it is good to actually talk a little track on BGP!

^ I am not close enough to Campbell County to know who did not participate in the meet at Trotwood - but I can tell you that Cov Cath was also missing some guys, including the High Jump champ from last year. They also did not take a huge contingent to the meet so there were a number of events they did not have an entry.

I am curious to hear where you think they may be down compared to in the past. Can you share? I know they have more guys in the program than in year's past, and return a large number of guys from last years state champion team.

And I also agree about it being good to see some track talk on here. Track is an exciting sport and you have large numbers participating. Only downside is some meets can be very long! :D

I've often heard the following - the only thing more boring than track is field.

That being said, I'm not one who thinks that is the case. I LOVE going to track meets. My dad was a track (among other sports) coach back in the early 60s, then as I got older we would both help work the (Maryland) state meets. Now, I typically attend a meet or two per week during track season; either high-school or college.

Yes, they sometimes do run long. However, the KHSAA championships typically run about 3.5 hours, and there's something going on all the time. I can think of many worse ways to spend an afternoon.

Very easy answer--and it is a glaring hole ......... DISTANCE.

With the numbers that Cov Cath has .... you would expect them to be significantly better than what they are. They may have finished 2nd in cross--but I remember watching 3 runners physically fall down within 50 meters of the finish--while a total of 17 runners got ahead of those guys to ensure that they didn't win. Not to mention .. they haven't been a player in NKY in cross since at least 2004. Not sure what the problem is there ... or why it is happening .. but the Colonels used to be much, much stronger. (Not to mention ... the new sheriff in town has been REALLY good since 2005).

In the end, that may not cost them a state championship in 2A. But ... Central has a couple of distance heavy hitters who just arrived this season who are significantly better than anyone that Cov Cath could throw out there.

Distance could determine who the best team is in NKY. (Naturally the state championship is more important ... but we are talking about NKY).

I do agree that the depth of quality distance guys is an area where they do need to improve. I do think we will see a better showing as these guys are a year older. You mention Central gaining some guys, in this area, but I think where Central needs to gain is depth (they did not run in many relays at state last year), and I also would need to go back and look, but I think they scored very few points in the field events. So, I do like the blue Colonels chances this year, both in NKy and at State. Who knows, we have a long season still ahead of us. Good luck to all the guys from all the schools. Have fun and stay healthy!
