Have you ever considered a "theme garden"? Some don't take much room at all. For example, a salsa garden with tomatoes, hot peppers, cilantro. One of our summer favorites is cucumber salad - with onions and tomatoes. We use galvanized tubs as containers for peppers, tomatoes and herbs.

 

As far as herbs go, sage is easy to grow around here but it will take over a garden quick. We generally go with basil, parsley, thyme, lavender, rosemary, oregano, chives, dill, tarragon and marjoram. Lemon balm smells nice, but is another one that will overrun everything else unless planted in a container.

I had the Topsy Turvey last year and it wasn't too successful for me. Part of the reason was over watering, and the other was a lack of direct sunlight for half of the day. I did have success with some bell peppers and habenaros.

Are jalapeno's easy to grow?

My roommates Mom grows a ton.

 

Honestly I would have already tried this but our families keep us very well stocked with fresh veggie's.

I love this idea.

We were successful with seedless (English) cucumbers last year. Built a trellis of two stakes and wove heavy, plastic-coated cord thru it like shoe laces. Was only about 2 1/2 - 3 feet tall. The vines climbed the trellis and the cukes were straight and tasty! Had cukes, tomatoes and peppers. Want to expand this year with some herbs. Great ideas on here! Thanks!

Im my garden all Peppers are very easy to grow. Bell, Banana and jalapeno peppers have been my personal favorites. It seems like you pick 1 and the next day 2 have grown back. Another easy and favorite are green onions and leaf lettuce, wilted with hot bacon grease over it.

I think I may actually try some hot peppers and cilantro to go with the plethora of tomatoes I receive every year for a salsa garden. I would only be able to grow in containers as my back yard doesn't get much sunlight and the dogs pretty much own it anyways. So any suggestions on how to get started?

I should add that there is a HUGE emphasis on cheap for this project. I already have somewhere to get the peppers. But I'm not sure what would be cheap and viable options to grow them in. Or if there are things I (or my family) might already have laying around the house to grow them in.

Five-gallon buckets should do you just fine.

Mint is another good herb to grow. Great as a pasta garnish
