March 29, 201016 yr This year, I've decided to grow several vegetables in my tiny back yard and herbs in planter boxes on my front porch. I experimented last summer with chives and basil and it was a huge success. And, unlike Birdsfan, who's been know to order his salad with the directive to "hold the lettuce" I absolutely LOVE vegetables. So, this year, I decided to grow some of the things I love best fresh, and seem to cost so much to buy at the store. I bought one of those upside down tomato growing kits. Hope it works. :lol: I'm growing some green onions, radishes and yellow squash. I'd like to grow some green beans and peas, but am a little worried about the room that will require. As I said, my back yard is tiny. What with growing the squash, I may have used up my "usable" garden space. And, I really only need to grow enough for one person. I don't have a deep freezer and I hate canned vegetables. What other veggies could I grow that could be reasonably contained in a small garden? I'm growing rosemary, thyme, basil and chives in planter boxes on my front porch again. Any other ideas for must-have herbs to grow?

This a gross exageration of my version of the truth! :irked: I wholeheartedly deny that I would eat any of the other crap they put in salads...except maybe the croutons. I have been known to salvage French dressing-coated croutons from the depths of one of those prairie grazing nightmares.

March 29, 201016 yr I know very little about gardening but... How about some peppers? My dad typically has a garden and has had some success with peppers. Do you have any wildlife around your house? We have had a very difficult time keeping the deer & rabbits away. As far as any herbs...garlic? No idea if it's easy to "grow" or if you enjoy it. Just a thought.

Oh...and some pesky cats. I should try garlic. It's like growing chives, as I understand it. Good thought!
March 29, 201016 yr Author I am a big herb guy....you have to grow basil and cilantro. Got the basil. I grew cilantro last year with great success. Thanks, RP! I forgot about that one for this year. Which variety of basil do you grow? I bought Sweet Basil, but there were a couple of others that intrigued me as well.
March 30, 201016 yr Fresh cilantro is tough to beat. Use the cilantro with your tomatos and envite me over when the salsa is ready...
March 30, 201016 yr Fresh banana peppers on a sald are awesome! They are easy to grow, too! You can get mild or hot. Also, I grow jalapenos that I use to make pico de gallo and salsa. With your tomatoes and cilantro, all you need is a little onion and you've made it truly home grown!

March 30, 201016 yr Are jalapeno's easy to grow? Oh yes...considering that I do nothing but water them and eat them! Lots of veggies even with only a few plants. I can't wait until time to get my container garden started!
