University of Memphis may sue Calipari

Featured Replies

Per Dan Wolken, beat writer for Commercial-Appeal.

Memphis may ask John Calipari to return the $360,000 in bonuses he earned for winning 81% of his games and going to 2008 Final Four.

U of M counsel Sheri Lipman: "That is now on the table, and we're going to take a look at that and decide what to do."

I would think filing suit against the NCAA might be there best option.

WOW! I really dunno what else to say. I can almost understand it because the University is being stripped of it's accomplishments, however Calipari has been cleared of any wrong doing in the case so that's kinda sketchy.

Is there a link for this? I am confused. What may they potentially be suing him for? I do not understand the 81% thing.

Repayment of performances clauses in his contract...

See suing seems like such a dirty word, but it would be a civil suit stating that Calipari was compensated with bonuses that essentially he didn't deserve due to the University being stripped of their accomplishments for that season. However the court could rule that Calipari was not at fault which is what the NCAA stated, thus it seems like they could just be dragging the University's athletic department in the mud. I guess it would really depend on his contract and how the law suit is filed.

OK. That does not tell me much :D

What "performance clauses"?

Going to the Final 4 and winning 81% of his games... :idunno:

That makes sense, I guess. The 81% thing still has me confused I guess.

I think I am trying to look in to this too deeply.

I'd assume he had a clause in his contract stating if he won a certain % of games, he would earn incentives / bonuses.

By winning 81%, he met this goal. So, he was paid a performance bonus. Now that Memphis has been stripped of the W's, they want their money back.

As I have said before, I have yet to understand the significance of removing victories and pulling down banners.

Despite being stripped of the wins, illegal activity or not, Memphis cannot put a monetary value on what Calipari delivered to that University. Only thing I know, it is worth a heck of a lot more than $360,000.

If Memphis wants to get over this and quit being drug through the mud, just go on about your business and pretend nothing happened. Heck, it is what the record books show. Quit filing suits, putting things on the table, etc.

Well, since Memphis lost in the NIT, they've got plenty of free time over there.
