Frankly, from a tight end's standpoint, a bad QB in an offense that uses the TE is basically the same as a good one in an offense that doesn't use the TE. I'm going where I can get more looks.

I mean the Browns made Steve Haiden seem serviceable at TE...:lol:

It all depends on where you're at in your career. Younger guys want to go where they can put up the big numbers to get the big contracts. Veterans want to go to teams where they can get a ring.

 

Or if they already have a ring, then trying to get one last payday....

Haha... well I mean that is the impression I get by this. Your gonna pay a first rounder more dough... and he won't be as experienced. Unless they simply have a crush on one of the rookie TE's.. who knows with the Bengals?

Believe me I know they haven't used the TE much at all. However as I said before, can you please tell me when the last time they even had a good TE? It wouldn't make much sense would it, to make the TE a big part of your offense when you have no good TE's. Its pretty bad when the best TE you have had over the years was a guy named Matt Schobel. That guy would have been at best the 2nd TE or even a 3rd TE on on some teams. You have to have talent, to use talent.

 

The Bengals are in a position now where if they had a talented TE, they really could use it. Since they are becoming more of a running team, that would really open things up for a TE on play action. If they had a TE with some talent, I think they would use them more. Shoot you seen them try to use the two horrible TE's they had last year more.

Or if they already have a ring, then trying to get one last payday....

Nobody can argue that Watson wouldn't be an upgrade in Cincinnati, but some people are making it sound like the Bengals passed on Tony Gonzalez.

 

He's a solid, pass-catching TE. I don't understand the outcry. He's not the only TE in the league that can give you 400 yards.

 

First, the Bengals addressed a huge need with Antonio Bryant. Second, as stated on here, they don't use the TE's much. Third, as we saw last year, the identity of this team is not Colts-lite anymore. Its being physical and pounding the football.

 

Spending 6+ million (at least), on a guy who isn't a great blocker, is injury prone and, while possessing the raw tools, has by and large underachieved as a receiver during his career doesn't make that much sense to me.

 

The Bengals aren't going to break the bank in free agency, so I'd prefer to see that money spent elsewhere and on somebody else. Last year was the first season of his career that he played 16 games and he produced 29 catches for 404 yards. That in an offense that throws the ball like crazy and struggled to find a third option to complement Moss and Welker. If he were that good, he should have produced more in New England because the opportunity was there.:idunno:

 

There's no doubting the potential, but after 6 years, there is reason to doubt him ever reaching it. Its OK to draft on potential, but I'm not a fan of signing FA's with that in mind.

You keep talking about him being an underachiever so far. But how was he suppose to really put up big numbers, there was not enough balls to go around. You had Welker who has been catching 115 passes a year for the last three years. Then you had Moss on the other side who is one of the best ever, then throw in how the Pats like running screens to Faulk and that don't leave much room for their TE to catch much. He showed his potential the year before the Pats signed Moss and Welker, when they were using a lot of two TE sets and actually used the TE. He would have been a perfect fit for the Bengals IMO. Not to mention they wouldn't be tempted at all to use that first round pick on a TE then.

Sounds like as much as anything the Bengals are caught in a vicious cycle w/re to TEs. If they're truly serious about upgrading the position, we'll find out pretty quickly on day 1 of the draft. Otherwise, they're going to have to overpay — and by a lot — for a vet TE.

This is one TE they should have got though, and that is why I brought this thread up. For the contract he got, I don't think it would have been overpaying either.

I saw the game where Champ Bailey got a pick and was running down the sideline and Ben chased him down. They showed the play later and showed that Ben was on the other side of the field and still caught Champ.

 

I know his dad a preacher out of South Carolina, and he will be at the FCA camp this summer speaking. He also will bring a tape of the play and show the kids.

 

Try and Goggle Ben and see if they have the play, you will not believe it.

I think it was a good move by Waston the Browns always have put a lot of value in the TE position. Just look at some of the past TE's they've had. The Bengals on the other hand you have to go back to find a productive TE.
