futurecoach Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Why in the heck did the Bengals not try to get this guy? The Browns got him for 3 years for 12 Million dollars, so it was not a huge contract. He would have been perfect for the Bengals. He is a very athletic and fast TE, and his best year came in 2006 when the Patriots used a lot of double TE sets. His numbers haven't been as great lately, just because their offense doesn't focus on the receivers as much anymore. He would have been a perfect pickup for the Bengals IMO. I didn't know he was a free agent, or else I would have mentioned it before. The Browns got a steal with him IMO.
bigblueinsanity Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Great move. If the Browns can get a decent QB they should have an okay O next season.
5wide Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 He's been an underachiever pretty much his entire career. He's a solid addition, and most certainly would have been a huge upgrade for Cincinnati. Anyone capable of catching the ball would be...
UKMustangFan Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 How do you know they didn't try? If I were a TE, the Bengals are team #32 out of 32 I'd be interested in...
John Anthony Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Very nice move for Cleveland he is an athletic TE. Does this mean the Bengals aren't drafting a TE? A first rounder would be more expensive and no experience????
futurecoach Posted March 12, 2010 Author Posted March 12, 2010 How do you know they didn't try? If I were a TE, the Bengals are team #32 out of 32 I'd be interested in... Yeah because the Browns are a very entertaining team to go to, and definitely have stability in the passing game at QB. So if both teams wanted him, then it definitely was the smarter move to join the Browns... Not to mention it seems like any other time the Bengals are interested in someone, it has been reported by people. Never even heard the slightest word about him. So its pretty safe to say IMO that they really didn't try much, and if they did I think there is a better chance he would have rather came here than there.
Jim Schue Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 How do you know they didn't try? If I were a TE, the Bengals are team #32 out of 32 I'd be interested in... Bingo. The Bengals show zero interest in making the TE a part of their offensive package, so it's no wonder they can't get a good one.

The Browns have shown in the recent past they use a TE, the Bengals don't. Why would he want to play somewhere where he'd essentially be nothing more than an o-lineman?

Why would he want to play somewhere where he'd essentially be nothing more than an o-lineman? Why would he want to play somewhere where he doesn't have a QB who can throw him a ball? The Browns as any offensive guy, would have been THE LAST PLACE I would have wanted to go to. Yes the Bengals have never done good with using their TE's, but please tell me who was their last good TE? That is also another reason for it. Its pretty sad that Matt Schobel was the best TE they had in the last decade. You actually have to have a talented guy to use him. It actually seems like they tried to use them more last year, but they couldn't catch a dang pass. So its hard to tell how they would use one, if they actually had a good one. However I still don't believe for one second, that a guy would choose to go to the Browns over the Bengals if both teams were trying. At least with the Bengals, would have been better chance at winning and a QB who can actually get him the ball. The Browns really offer nothing over the Bengals at this moment.
Jim Schue Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Frankly, from a tight end's standpoint, a bad QB in an offense that uses the TE is basically the same as a good one in an offense that doesn't use the TE. I'm going where I can get more looks.

Veterans want to go to teams where they can get a ring.

John Anthony Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 So are they not taking a TE in the first round?
