But that piece of legislation needs to thrown out and started from scratch. Mitch got this one right. The Dem's are absolutely trying to ram this down the throats of all of us and they are totally unwilling to listen to anything from the other side of the aisle. But I'm sure that Mitch and the rest of the Republicans would be more than willing to accept any reasonable parts of what the Dems currently have, however few they may be.

I agree about a complete scratch, by all means keep what both sides agree on and scrap the rest and then seriously work together on a sensible plan and don't rush it.

I was amazed at how clearly the Republicans presented their ideas. It became quite evident that the problem is not that the Reps have no better “ideas” to offer this process, but that the Dems aren’t willing to listen. They have no interest in true bipartisan cooperation and compromise.

 

It became obvious that there is remarkable consensus on many fundamental points that could be acted upon immediately... intelligent steps that could cut the cost of healthcare across the board by 33% or more right out of the gate.

 

There is no reason other than myopic partisan arrogance the Dems cannot pare down their oppressive 2,700 page bill and begin to implement smaller, but genuinely constructive and truly bipartisan advances… allowing for legitimate debate and dickering over the less popular components later… and outright elimination of the pork and bribes that are part of the current bill.

 

Of course, such a sensible course of action would make it much tougher for President Obama to take credit for sweeping legislation that would become his hallmark achievement for future generations.

 

Ramming the present bill through in a partisan show of force will prove to be career suicide for many Dems… including the President. That’s the problem with designing polls to give you results you want to hear… instead of seeking the genuine pulse of the people.

Both chambers will then take up a bill to remove some of the provisions that I suspect both of us find objectionable. It will be amusing to watch and see if the Republicans really choose to filibuster a bill to eliminate the "cornhusker kickback". The core of the senate bill is a good bill. It will expand access to healthcare for millions, reduce the cost of insurance for those with existing insurance, eliminate such things as the pre-existing conditions exclusion, make insurance much easier to obtain for small employers and over time result in a small reduction in the budget deficit. This process to pass this bill was badly mishandled. They spent way too long trying to get republicans on board. It was never going to happen, regardless of what was in the bill. They allowed the death panel nonsense to take hold and create strong fear of the bill. The lies and misrepresentations continued even yesterday from Senator Lamar (I'll get back to you later) Alexander. He was called on his lie. The truth is that if they had allowed Mitch McConnell to write the bill, with the condition that no one could ever know that he wrote it, he would have been just as strong in his oposition. Pass the bill, fix the screw ups and be done with it.

Of course costs will go up. The question is whether they will go up as fast as they would without the bill. My small business was just notified of a 35 percent rate increase for next year. The existing system is broken and getting worse. The enate bill is not perfect, but with the elimination of a few provisions it will be a big improvement over the existing system. I would be very happy to see the congress add a few of the republican ideas i.e. tort reform. Include some of those ideas in the fix up bill.

I'm sure the Dems will have their way, but to portray this as anything but a partisan power play is disingenuous. Spinning the "summit" yesterday as a victory for Obama by showing how recalcitrant and unimaginative the Reps are is nothing more than wishful thinking as well. The Reps were calm, informed, and articulated their positions very clearly.

 

I have no doubt the intent was to show up the Reps and allow O and the Dems to ram this stink infused bill through without bipartisan support. I am also convinced this move will cost many of the Dems their political careers… it should. A vast majority of the Americans responsible for paying the bills the Dems are racking up have had enough, and they will not tolerate the abuse and arrogance of power any longer.

Because the present bill is so laden with pork that it can't be salvaged. I have no problem with starting with a blank slate and putting the few good things the Dems have proposed back in as long as good ideas from the other side are included as well.
