I think that you will find that number to vary greatly depending on the team. I think $250-$1,000 is probably the range but it depends on a lot of variables. If you are playing in a national event(s) it's going to cost a lot more than playing in a local league. It also depends on things like having a field available to you or do you have to rent a field.

 

The thing that a lot of parents overlook is the additional costs that are not direct to the team such as hotels, gas, meals, and things like lessons.

We will play in about 5 local tourneys and a national out of town tournament. We are also going to Louisville to play a few teams in a round robin early next month.

I would agree that 85 games is too many to be jamming into one Spring/Summer season. If that also includes Fall games or spread out over a longer period, then it's more acceptable.

 

For 9 years olds, it's too many period. They are 9. They need to play army out in the yard, go to the pool, ride bikes, etc..., and not worry about which MLB team will draft them because dad has already determined they are a surefire first round draft pick. Even this baseball nut has learned there are other things to life besides baseball.

 

I say that, yet I am a guy that probably was on the verge of scheduling too many games while I coached. My son is a pretty fair ballplayer who doesn't love the game like he used to. Still enjoys it, mind you, but not with the same passion he once had and I have to wonder if deep down his dad jammed too much baseball down his throat too fast. Too many dads (and, yes, I am/was one) live out their failed baseball careers through their kids.

 

Excellent post! How far can you push the kids before they lose that love for the game? Its hard because you want to give them more opportunities than you had as a kid but there is a fine line. I realized my son was playing too many AAU and school games from Oct-July over the past 4 yrs when I brought up a memory to him where his team won a tight ballgame. He said I don't remember that one Dad. Heck I remembre games I played at the Bellevue Vets Youth League in 1979 to this day and he couldn't remember a game played 2 yrs prior. That hit home for sure. If you have kids that truly love it and eat up every minute thab fantastic but just be careful.

This weekend was to be a big kickoff for a lot of the youth teams in NKY/Greater Cincinnati. I know that rain cancelled some tournaments and games but many were still played yesterday. In Fairfield the Butler County Bombers National along with the Midland Tomahawks won their respective pools in the 12U divisions. Does anyone have any scores or updates from any other events?

I know the Columbus Cobras won the West side of the 12u Early Bird Tournament at the Flash Complex. The East is still being played at Huddy..

The Ky Hawks U10 won the Quest for the Best at Rumpke this weekend. They won all 4 games, three of them coming from behind. Great start to the season for the Hawks!

In the 12u West Divison (Early Bird Gets the Worm Tourney) at Huddy the Ky Bucs beat the Bluegrass Blast in the finals. Todd Ramey of the Blast hit a few off of the 300ft fence in the tournament. The kid can flat out mash a ball for a 12yr old..:ylsuper:

Yes, the U12 Hawks played also. They did not play well. I believe they won 1 and lost 2. It is still early. I am sure that they will knock the rust off and rebound nicely. The last couple of years they have been a very strong team.

Knothole is great for the younger kids. If your kid wants to play at a higher level then there are more competitive leagues.
