NKY Youth Baseball

Featured Replies

Football is over, basketball tournaments are about to begin, and pitchers and catchers will soon be reporting. It can only mean that baseball is right around the corner. What leagues do your kids participate in or which ones do you follow? There are so many out there. Knothole, Tri-state, and SWOH just to name a few. Let's hear your opinions on which leagues are the strongest and which teams are some of the more competitive ones out there in the respective age groups.

In Nky there should be some very strong 12u teams. I know the Bluegrass Blast have added to their already strong core of players from last year. The Ky Bucs added a lot to their team also. The Ky Kids, Riverhawks, and Ky Diamond Jaxx should also be very good. Overall there is a ton of talent at that age level. Should be a very good spring and summer..:thumb:

The 12U Midland Tomahawks are going to be unreal this year. They are based out of the east side of Cincinnati, but have two NKY boys on their roster. They've been a top National League team in SWOL the past few years, having gone to Puerto Rico for the AABC World Series two years ago. They have a very deep pitching staff, including a couple of pitchers that can flat out hurl (I stood there with a gun and watched one consistently hit 68-69 mph). I think they have a legit shot at winning in Cooperstown the week they play there.

I coach a Knothole team down in Ludlow and I know our stud from last year made this team. He thought I'd be mad at him, but I was ready to urge him on in this direction anyhow. Being a baseball guy I knew he wasn't getting any better playing the competition in Knothole. The kid threw people out from behind the plate with ease and wasn't touched on the mound. He just threw it past people.

Kid can put 'em out at 300' as well.

That's a very cool, "kid-first" attitude and I commend you on that. I'm pretty familiar with this team and will actually be helping coach it once my own son's high school season is over. I am hoping to go to C-town with them. Sincere best of luck to you and your team this season.

We were a game away from making the city tournament last year and won a Memorial Day Tourney. We should do well again. Losing the player I mentioned hurts. Just under half of our RBI's are gone and everyone of our over the fence round trippers. He was a blast to watch and coach. I hope he does great there.

We both have a great respect for baseball and could talk about it all day so it hurt when he asked if I thought he should try it, but it was also a puff your chest out moment that I knew he could make it on a team like this after I coached him since he was 5!

And without question your coaching has been a big part of this kid's overall ability. The Midland coach (my brother) says the kid has "baseball smarts". You are not born with baseball smarts - it has to be taught.

He picked up another kid that is probably a better hitter than your former player. You watch this kid in the cage and there's no way you could possibly imagine he's only 12. He's played up the past few years and this will be the first time he's played in his own age group. This team is really going to be special.

The kid had baseball smarts that you wouldn't believe. I've tried for years to teach him a decent change-up, but it's hard to preach it's importance when his fastball cannot come close to getting touched.

Well, again, best of luck this season and if you ever go to a Midland game to see your former player, ask the Midland coach if his older (and much smarter and better-looking :lol:) brother is there - that would be me. :thumb:

Another thing your brother will quickly realize is that the kid has unbelievable leadership. Being in Knothole it's rough on a kid of his level becuase we obviously can't hold tryouts and things. With that you get children that are no where near your level. I've never seen the kid yell at another player in practice or game. He used to discuss situations to our players if they threw to the wrong base or could've cut down a run.

That goes a long way in assisting the coaches during a game.

So what is most talented league in the tri-state area?

I do plan on going and catching at least one game this summer. I'll have to make sure you're there for it.:thumb:

Judging from coaching in several tournaments, umpiring many teams in the area, and just discussing with baseball friends I would assume it's SWOH.

I'd like to get back into coaching in NKY if my work schedule would allow it.

So what is most talented league in the tri-state area?

Is that even a question? The National League of the SWOL is the best League in the tri-state area. It is like the GCL of high school football..
