What? (What?) I don't get your 'What'?

 

The Colonels have had a rough reason having trouble getting much point production out of anyone but Thelen & Wellbrock. Last night they had 10 players in the scoring column. That's a good sign. They had less turnovers. They had more flexibility with their guard play with Pauly & Masinot sharing the duties. Connelly is showing tremendous strength. Their outside shooting is coming around which was sorely lacking. No one seems timid about taking it to the hole. Players are stepping up. It's looks like development of a long bench is taking place. We're in the month of February with a good few weeks to improve on the new found confidence. I see this as a good sign of starting to peak at the right time. The Colonels keep moving in this direction, I see them as a valid contender when post season begins. In my post I said 'starting to peak at the right time' meaning that come tournament time they should be peaking. That's 'What' :eek: :idunno:

...and before you get the chance to say, "But they were only playing Holy Cross", I believe that the Indians are struggling this year, but are better than their record would suggest. They always bring to the court a competitive team that plays for 32 solid minutes no matter who they're playing. Sure, they're not Holmes, but they're still a feisty bunch that's not going to let any team get anything without working for it.

BTW I forgot to add that CovCath Internet Radio mentioned last night that fomrer CovCath basketball player and Grad Danny Noll of Centre College was selected to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Acadmeic All-District Basketball team for his work in the classroom and on the hardwood.

IMO - I still do not understand how you can continue to give minutes to players who do not produce. Some Covcath guards play minutes without producing any real positive stats (points, assists, steals, rebounds vs turnovers.....). Does anyone have official stats for the season on all the Covcath guards? It would be interesting to see the production of each guard, especially against minutes played. The good news is that Covcath made a few outside shots and controlled the boards without turning the ball over. Still must continue to improve the outside shooting and control turnovers with each game left to be ready for the districts and region.

I think sometimes there is too much emphasis on who puts the ball in the basket and not enough emphasis on who prevents baskets. It's no secret that there are some that don't light up the scoreboard. But if CovCath can get balls to their scorers and keep the other team from scoring, that's a positive. I know Coach L is taking his share of pot shots, but he does not put a kid on the floor unless he can help on at least one end of the floor. Machinot and Hudepohl only combined for 3 points, but I will bet everything I own that while on the floor together, they prevented more than that. All you have to do is score more than your opponent. There can be an attitude at times that CovCath does not win good enough. Coming off an 8-19 season last year, that attitude is laughable.

I agree that if you can play tough defense then you can earn minutes without other stats. IMO I have not seen that kind of defense displayed by Machinot and Hudepohl. I guess we will see in the final four games, district and region.

I guess we have different definitions of "peaking."

I am just curious as to who you feel has produced the stats to deserve more minutes? One thing that statistically hurts the group from a statistical nature is for assist. IMO this team misses an awful lot of bunnies, a number of which would be assist if the shot was made. There are also wuite a few times this year where someone was given a turn over, when again IMO it should have gone to the reciever of the pass for not coming to the ball etc. Again though, who do you think is producing the numbers but not getting the PT?

I'd say we do. You can look at the past, present and future of a team. The past can certainly be telling. The present more so. The present team is showing more fire and promise than in their more recent past, and look poised and ready to put the past behind them and make the best of their near future. Some teams have the ability to grow and put it all together as the season advances. This Colonel team looks like they're doing just that and right on schedule. Coach L isn't the type to give up on his guys and knows the philosophy of team growth. Will they end up at Rupp? Pretty tall order to say the least. They still have a chance to end their season in respectable fashion though, and from what I'm seeing, they're aiming at doing so.

Overall I thought the Colonels played well. The outside shots for the most part were not forced, and they hit more than normal. The turnover number was great for this team. The best part of that was that the passing by the guards was good, and the turnovers they did have were for the most part not due to the I really like the aggressiveness that we showed on defense. The guys really pressured the ball and got after it. We have to do a better job of getting thru the picks though. The Indians got several easy baskets from these. One other thing that I was very happy with was, the 'cheerleading' done by the team. The guys were congratulating each other more than I have seen this year, and the bench showed a lot of excitement, more so than most games this year. I did not notice the yelling at each other that was present the previous few games, and also for the most part the reactions when taken out of the game were good. Overall I would rate this one as one of the better games the guys have played!

I agree with you as well on this. Will they end up at rupp - No. But, I do see the guys accepting their roles more, playing harder, and the team growing. The drubbings the guys took were bad, but part of that I truly believe were to the fact the some of the guys were out.

One comment on the crazies - I totally agree about not letting them drive last nite. We have had so few snows this year, that last nite would not have been a good one to have guys who have little time driving in snow, driving in snow. Now, whether the weather was the reason they were not there I am not sure. Was there something else going on?

Although their numbers were down, the ones who braved the elements were very spirited from the opening tip to the final buzzer. Coach Listerman made it a point to come into the crowd and speak to the Crazies after the game. He thanked them for coming out to support the team in such bad weather. Very classy move. All things considered, I thought the Crazies represented themselves well. Clyde makes a good point about their turnout for the Scott game.

I agree that they were vocal and into the game even though they were low in numbers. I personally was wondering if there may have been a retreat weekend as to me it appeared there were more juniors there than were seniors. With regards to the Scott game - I wondered the same thing.
