Both teams last night equally suffered from sheer exhaustion. Neither seem very deep and that is their biggest problem. Hard to hit late game 3's when your legs are shot.

And that lack of depth in a tourney played in such a short time span will hurt them, as it did to Elliott County the last couple of years in the sweet sixteen.

You need more than just five to win tough tournaments played in a short time span and I just don't think Newport is deep enough either.

Thanks for proving my point, when did being big start being a disadvantage. Both on that play and when Foster charged into him were both fouls that get called if anyone else besides a big is involved. A foul is a foul period.

 

Even if it technically is a foul, Geisler is not going to get that call. Right or wrong. I have seen bigs get killed in the lane after driving and no call is made. Picking out one play against NCC is stretching. I am sure Newport got hosed on a call or two.

No doubt about it... and this coming from someone with no horse in the race. I would've been happy for either team to win in a fair hard fought game. For years I have always enjoyed NewCath's 'never say die' style of play. Newport ultimately overcame this game of 8 against 5. That says a lot about Newport for keeping their cool. They wanted this game in the worse way that even the unfair officiating couldn't deny them of a win. I think I would've been sick if Newport had lost because of it. I felt like I was watching a movie where the refs were blatantly one sided and the dramatic happy ending was for the team who had been cheated on were still victorious. Sadly though it wasn't a movie and I was seeing this injustice right before my eyes. Nothing irks me more than to see refs do their best to try to steal a game away from a team who is playing their hearts out. A few examples: (There were too many to count)

 

1. When Sizemore dove and stole the ball, then the whistle blows for a NewCath timeout for which they were granted and kept possession. That which came first was WAY too obvious.

 

2. In the 2nd half Luther makes a clean block on a shot near the basket, Chappy is standing directly behind the shooter with no clear view of hands and calls the foul. Just ugly.

 

3. In the 2nd half Newport makes a strong layup with Geisler clobbering shooter. (Either Luther or Foster, I forget) No foul called for an 'and one' in an extremely crucial part of Newport's comeback.

 

4. Late in the game with Newport coming very close to sealing the deal, Collins gets called for a foul close to the basket that was just pitiful.

 

Newport held on tight no matter what and still got the victory. The refs did all they could to deny them. That and NewCath's 0-20 3 point shooting were the 23 ugly displays of the evening. The refs should be ashamed of themselves, but if I ever write a basketball movie about unfair refs, I'll keep them in mind. Thanks for the material.

I totally agree with you. I just wanted to see the kids decide the outcome of the game not the officals.Congrats to both teams because it was a great game with both teams having ups and downs.All those kids were playing their hearts out and you could see and feel their emotions.Great game and good luck Newport you guys deserve it.

Individual calls can be argued forever and much of it is perspective. However, I think an interesting question is when should an official scratch themselves from a game? If Tim O'Hara is indeed an alum of NCC should he ref an NCC game? Does it matter if he has been out of school 20+ years?
