Covington Catholic/Cooper Prediction

CovCath vs Cooper @ Cooper HS

in a HS Basketball Triple Header

Last year CovCath defeated Cooper by a score of 63/29 at CovCath.

Has Cooper improved enough to compete with CovCath?

Will anybody attend the CovCath vs Cooper Frosh game as it goes up against the UK/UL game?

Will the CovCath fans find Cooper HS on Longbranch road in Boone County or will they get lost driving to this game?

Me? I will be there, as it will be the closest CovCath basketball game of the year for me to attend from my home!

Is the gym as nice as the Baseball Diamond or the Football field?

If you can't attend, then listen to CovCath Internet Radio as they will be there for the Varsity clash starting at 7:30pm.

I don't think so saw them in the Raceland Derby Classic looked pretty week to me Ashland beat them 85-62 Raceland beat them 9 and Elliott beat them 74-54.

The Cooper gym is very nice. The one end with all of the glass adds a lot to it. Great people at Cooper as well.

Cooper is still a year away from being competitive. They're getting better with a strong staff.

Unless CCH mails it in it will not be close.

CCH by as much as they want. Cooper making progress but still a year away

The gym is very nice as is the rest of the school. The game I would think is most competitive is the freshman game but that's the one I will miss as UK vs UL is too much to miss. I'm sure a couple of folks on here will be sending me text updates though. :thumb: I may be there to catch the next two but they may not be too close of a ballgame.

If they let Maniacci play frosh they may make it competetive but the CovCath guards are much better than Cooper's and that will be the difference in that game. But like I said, Manacci at 6'6 could be a difference maker, especially if Cov Cath doesnt have anyone that can body up on him.

Cooper has improved and plays very hard. They can stay with teams for about 3 quarters but usually run out of gas in the 4th quarter trying to play catch up. They are not very good shooters and do not hit a high percentage of their free throws. Coach Sullivan will play a lot of kids and their better players are the underclassmen. The program will be a team to watch as they have a nice bunch of freshman players with some decent size. The 6'6" freshman is a little soft and hasn't really learned to play tall yet. He runs the floor pretty good and has a nice touch around the basket but gets pushed around a lot under both baskets. Not seeing CovCath's freshman or JV team play I would think that the freshman game will be close. Since so many of the JV players have to play varsity the JV game may or may not be very close. The final score of the varsity game will come down to how well CovCath handles pressure as coach Sullivan will probably throw a full court press at them to try to keep them from setting up the big man in the low post. They don't have anyone to matchup with Thelen and coach Sullivan likes the man-to-man defense.

Too much size for the Jags to contend with in this game.

I'd expect the Colonels to get up by 20 and coast from there. Both Thelen and Wellbrock should have big games down low.

Covcath- 64

Cooper- 40

I see Cov Cath taking this one away. Cov Cath 56 Cooper 41

"Since so many of the JV players have to play varsity the JV game may or may not be very close."

At least Cooper is developing their Freshman and JV players - in hopes of having them compete at a higher level at varsity. CCH has so many juniors and seniors playing varsity - it's a joke! CCH isn't interested in developing the younger kids. It's a tragedy that CCH has 4 juniors starting JV - talented sophomores not getting much time and freshman kids should get the chance to play JV as well. That's how you develop a program. CCH should crush Cooper with 4 juniors and they should be ashamed. I'd rather see CCH's JV team lose every game using frosh/soph. At least the kids would be getting the experience they need to compete at the next level.

Congrats to all the other schools who want to use the JV year as a year to develop their frosh/soph kids. CCH should be embarrassed that they go out on the court with juniors playing against other teams freshman and sophmores. It's a joke! Then the same juniors who played the JV game, get playing time at the varsity level. What is going on with that program?

If juniors and seniors aren't good enough to play varsity they should be cut. The younger kids need the opportunity to be developed. The shame of it is that I hear the CCH program is turning off so many talented frosh/soph, by not playing them, that they don't even want to come back next year. None of the sophomore JV players are even getting a glimpse of what playing Varsity feels like - I hear they rotate the last Varsity jersey between 4 players. So, one sophomore gets the opportunity to sit the Varsity bench, every fourth game. What's the point?

Bottom line, CCH JV should crush Cooper - using juniors - and the CCH coaching staff should be mortified to have to win this way.

Wow. You're either a Cooper fan making pre-excuses or you're a CCH fan who has someone not getting enough run.

CCH is fortuante enough, unlike many schools, to have a lot of kids at each grade level who want to and can play. JV is for development. CCH is developing 4 of its juniors for varsity action next year. Its the right thing to do. Sophomores are playing. If some sophomores decided not to play that's on them. They made a decision. They'll live with it.

Freshman are not needed at the JV level for most good programs unless they're super talented (ie Todd Jacobs/Bovard/Maile/Nesto). Let them develop at their proper level.

"Tragedy" and "ashamed?" Such drama from one's first post.

If they are good enough to play Varsity they will play at that level and Clyde gave you more than one example!

So start naming the kids who won't be back next year!

How are the juniors getting better and preparing for playing at the next level when they are competing against freshman and sophomores from other schools? I believe that if a junior isn't good enough to play at the varsity level then they should be cut and allow the opportunity for some younger kids with talent to get the experience they need to play at the next level. And, if you have a junior getting significant playing time at the JV level, and also seeing significant playing time at the Varsity level.....then that talented young man should be playing Varsity. Period. Not whining that they aren't getting enough playing time at the varsity level and being brought down to play at the JV level just to keep him happy.

How are the sophs getting better and preparing for playing at the next level when they are riding the bench? Come next year, if they even come out at all, will they have the experience they need to play at the varsity level? Heck no, they aren't being developed. JV shouldn't be the time to develop juniors. It should be a time to develop the younger kids. There's only a couple sophs that play consistently - Cleves and Hayden. The other sophomores are lucky to see a couple minutes each. It really is unfortunate for those players.

Also, if a freshman does show potential they should be brought up to JV. That's what it means to develop a team. You are not developing a team for JV play - you are preparing these young men for varsity.

CCH kept too many players and the team in the coming years is going to suffer for it.

I will give you one example of a CovCath Junior playing JV ball and then making a huge difference in his senior year.

His name: #24 Greg Erpenbeck!

If Greg had been cut his junior year instead of having the opportunity to play JV and improve his game, then the CovCath team of 03/04 never makes it to Rupp and the Semi-Finals.

BTW I am still waiting for you to start naming the kids!

There are always going to be exceptions. The fact is that there are 7 seniors and 8 juniors and out of those 15 only 5 contribute on a nightly basis. That is not the development of a program. Does CCH want to win Freshman/JV Regional Tournaments or win at the Varsity level?

In a previous post you mentioned Bovard and Jacobs. Would these two players ever been the players that they became if they didn't have the experience playing varsity as sophomores? That experience allowed them to make major contributions as juniors and seniors.

If kids are so frustrated that they are considering not coming back, it has nothing to do with that individual's passion for the game of basketball. It has everything to do with not seeing any action and not being developed.

Gotta go watch CCH destroy Cooper tonight.
