It appears that rumors of Mason County's recent demise have been greatly exaggerated. :notworthy:

Mason Co will be very solid as they get Pawsett back. He will add a big body to the rotation and will allow them to do more things offensively as well.

 

Scott will follow their usual pattern and learn some things from this be a tough out come tourny time for Mason or GRC.

I was wrong on this one. Mason Co is better than some of us originally thought. Congrats to the Royals.

I have thought all along that Mason was still going to be very good and Fieldhouse is a tough place to play for any visiting team. Just my opinion but I think Mason is missing their best player in Pawswett. Setty and Gilbert are very good but Pawsett does so many good things on the floor.

I would rather play Mason than Scott.

 

As have said over and over, if your team is not conditioned and deep you will not beat Mason County,Fieldhouse or elsewhere. Scott is not right now,as evidenced by the 4th quarter and hopefully Clark County won't be sucking air in the 4th quarter like they were in the 10th region final last year or Mason County will be going back to Rupp Arena.

Question: With a carrying/palming violation called on each team in the first quarter, is this a point of emphasis this season? I watched a bunch of games last year and didn't see two carrying calls the whole season.

The officiating crew featured some of the better guys from the Bluegrass.

 

If thats the case then things are worse than I thought.

 

Scott played awful, by far the worse I've seen them play in this early season and they were in the game until about 2 mins in the 4th quarter.

Lyle and Walter are solid; I didn't recognize the third crew member but I'm sure there are several BGPers out there who know him.

 

As in any game, there were a couple of questionable calls, but I only saw a couple. And certainly they didn't affect the outcome. Bluegrass officials, who ref regions 10 and 11, tend to "let 'em play" much more than NKY officials. Fine by me.:thumb:

From the 2009-10 NFHS Basketball Points of Emphasis for Referees:

1. Travelling

2. Closely Guarded

3. Three Seconds

4. Block / Charge

5. Free Throw Administration

 

Not sure if each association statewide adds to this list of things to watch for but "palming" or carrying the ball not listed here.

 

I think all coaches want it called until it is called on their guy:laugh:.

 

In the game on Friday night the first one was called on Smith and was not a situation where he was being closely guarded or gained an advantage....standing at halfcourt getting ready to set up offense. Mason Co was yelling at official for the "carry" and got the call.

 

Probably 2 minutes later Gilbert goes to retreive a loose ball and takes two dribbles with no defensive pressure and obviously no advantage. Referee calls carry.

 

Did not think the first one was a carry and pretty sure second one was not as well.

 

Wasn't called rest of the game.

Fouls were 8 to 2 deep into the fourth quarter. The team who had the 8 fouls were the team who's coach said they didn't play "tough" enough the next day in the paper. I'd say the officials let "one of 'em" play.

 

I do want to add that the officials didn't cost Scott the game. I'm not blaming them for Scott's loss. Scott simply didn't play good enough to win.

Which is nearly the exact opposite of how the game started. Looks like Mason County adjusted to the officiating.

 

I still think Scott's starting 5 matches up pretty well with anyone in the region - just need to get significant minutes off the bench.
