Has Coach Schneider coached his last game at NCC?

Featured Replies

I know there was a thread on this a few weeks ago but I am looking for anything new. I am hearing Coach Schneider has coached his last game and a handful of hopefuls are positioning for the head coaching job at NCC.

Anyone?

If so NKY is losing a legend.

Last I heard his health situation had not been resolved. If this lingers past the Christmas break, I would doubt very much that he comes back. If his health improves I could see him coming back one more year, with the talent they have coming back.

Who are the names you are hearing? I always thought the Dan Wagner, the D-coordinator for the last eight or so years was a shoe in.

I'd love to see him be able to coach next year and win one more and go out on top and on his own terms.

That would be the leader, in my opinion.

Like Bobby Bowden, if you never make the choice to "go out on your own terms" then at some point you will likely go out, "on someone else's terms". It is always sad when it happens.

Does NCC have that much talent coming back? I know Kelly and Hightchew are back but aren't they losing all their key linemen? What impact does talent or lack of talent returning have on Schneider's decision? I could see it going either way. A lot of talent - come back for one last run... OR .... A lot of talent - don't come back to make it an easier transition for his successor. I had the thought he coached this year because he knew it was going to be a tough year and he didn't want his successor to have to deal with that. Like I said, the impact of the talent issue can be viewed either way.

Schneider was at that point at the end of the '90's. To his credit, he completely changed his philosophy and gave greater freedom to his coordinators. Many coaches w/ his level of success would have just tried to "fight through it." The program is has only been getting better since then, and Schneider deserves a lot of credit for sharing responsibility.

They have Cain, Daunt, Doyle, Hayes, Geisler, Big Jack all coming back. Outside of Smith, their aren't any real holes that can't be filled. The linemen were great, but next year the offense should be better.

I wasn't sure about Cain and Daunt. Definitely some good ones there. Is Cain through with QB next year as well? I see Hightchew as a very good running QB and just ok passing, kind of like Rigdon at Beechwood. NCC has relied a lot on the passing game this past decade. But it sounds like there is definitely talent. So how does that affect Schneider's decision in your opinion?

Any opinion that I give would be uneducated. I don't speak w/ Mr. Schneider frequently, and I don't know the extent of his health issues. Just from having played under him, I think that Coach Schneider just wants to coach...talent or no talent returning. I think that he enjoys helping to cultivate young men, the challenge of every new season.

In terms of Cain, I don't see him playing QB next year b/c he is invaluable as a LB'er. However, that doesn't mean that there won't be a Cain playing QB. Jake's younger brother was the freshman QB. I haven't seen him play, so I don't know if he can step into the varsity role next year, but many believe that he can. It will be interesting to see how Hitchew is used next year. NewCath generally has no problem switching QBs in mid-season (Jeff Smith and Brian Eviston come to mind) and playing the QB as a WR (Aaron Mann and Hank Bosely took over those roles). Brady and Kelly together in the backfield would give NewCath a player who can break it and a workhorse. The issue next year will be, as pointed out, how they fill the holes on the line.

Hope coach gets back on field and goes out on his own terms. Get Well

If coach Schneider decides to hang it up, good luck to him. As mentioned he has basically turned over the responsibilities to his coordinators so I really don't see much of a transitional problem with the coaching staff in place. I would like to see Wagner get the head coaching job, he deserves it!!! Best of luck to Coach Schneider and I hope it's nothing to serious for him and his family!!!

If not Wagner, I would think that Eddie Eviston, who is on the staff would be a viable candidate.
