If he doesn't blow the whistle, the play where the Qb tosses the ball into the air and the Murray player catches it in the end zone is a touchdown and Murray wins. Cheap or not. One of the worst calls I have ever seen at a high school event of that magnitude. The whistle should have never been blown due to the official not knowing the rule.

 

If he doesn't blow the whistle Greg doesn't throw the ball up in the air until he is actually out if the end zone! We had just won our 4 straight state title to become the first team in Ky history to do that so he was excited! I was right there when Yeagle called the play. He told him to run around the end zone until he saw the clock hit zero to run out of the end zone to take the safety. But the ref blew the whistle so either way like I have said many many times we would have won the title either way. If Murray would have earned this victory they would have scored when they had to and stopped us when they had to but they didn't so yes it would have been a Cheap Victory!

I believe people understand it, and ultimately the correct ruling (following the mishap by the referee) was made; but it still does not negate the fact the referee screwed up big time and it makes for good discussion. It is simply not natural to see any game end in an non-dead ball situation in the midst of a play. The only way it ever happens would be via this scenario.

I agree with you. I don't think we will ever see another ending like that in a State Final ever again. In a way I guess I'm glad to be part of history but I'm glad we came out on the winning end.:lol:

I think what JB is saying is if the whistle had not been blown, the QB would not have thrown the ball in the air. The whistle did not come after he threw the ball up in the air. He threw the ball up in the air because he heard the whistle. Big difference.

I disagree with you. If we would have lost we would have lost and had to deal with it but we didn't and if they had ruled it a touchdown it would have been a bad way to a State Title. We stopped Murray when we had to. They were in our red zone at least twice in the 4th qtr. The last drive they got to around the 15 yard line with about a min to play but our defense held. Their last play they threw a halfback option play that we knocked down in the end zone. They didn't stop us when they had to so again they didn't deserve to win this game.

 

It wasn't a bad call by the ref who I know his name but I won't name him. He was just going by what he thought he saw our QB go out of the end zone. If you guys remember this play was on Sportscenter for the bone head plays of the week until they found out what really happened. Channel 5 in Cincy was the only Station that showed our QB running around the end zone when the whistle blew when he threw the ball up in the air. If you ever watch the 94 game on tape they show it at the end him throwing up the ball after the whistle blew.

Our QB was a three year starter who was a first team all state player. He wasn't an all state player as a QB. That went to Chris Redmen. He was as a LB. He wouldn't throw up the ball if he didn't know the play or game was over.

Yeah seriously grant it was a mistake but either way our QB wouldn't have thrown up the ball in the air until he heard the whistle blow. That is my whole point. But if they are still bitter and think they won a rule is a rule. We outplayed them during the game and made the plays to win and they didn't.

 

Someone else said it is still fun to have a discussion about this after 15 years. I agree with them.
