Chris Matthews of MSNBC felt West Point was the wrong venue for President Obama’s speech on the War in Afghanistan: “I saw if not resentment, skepticism. I didn’t see a lot of warmth in that crowd out there, uh, the president chose to address tonight. And I think that is interesting. He went to maybe the enemy camp tonight to make his case.”

 

It's tough to get a feel for the interview from 31 seconds. Interesting, though.

That is shameful for Chris Matthews to call Westpoint 'enemy territory' for the POTUS.

Matthews is a turd. If someone doesn't bow before Obama they're racist, the enemy or a litany of other excuses in his opinion. His words have no relevance.

I didn't notice anyone looking hostile. Frankly, I expect a room full of cadets to be pretty intimidating. They don't typically act like a room full of other college kids. Plus, the topic had to be especially sobering to them. They're the ones who are going to be going to Afghanistan. I didn't see them so much hostile, as intent. I did notice a few who seemed to wear skeptical expressions, but didn't feel that was typical of the whole audience. I did notice they kept panning in on one Asian-American girl. I wasn't sure why, though.

In general you are correct. I don't think he meant it to mean literally "the enemy" but , rather, as a group that is not necessarily in agreement with him.

 

Regardless, it was simply a poor choice of words to express a point.

Frankly, my comments had nothing to do with the clip because I haven't watched it. I was just stating my personal observations from when I watched it on TV. Please know I do not make judgements based on clips...either for Obama or against him.

Matthews is obviously to the left. However, I don't recall him having a history of making controversial/insensitive/shocking statements as the other 3 you mention. In addition, he realized he was a fool for saying it and apologized. The others have never apologized and they have a history of inflammatory statements.
