This is the only state championship featuring two undefeated teams, I believe. I'd say the two best teams in 5A made it to the finals this year, which is not always the case.

 

This could be a game decided by how a couple of key plays turn out.

 

I can't comment on JH as I don't know their program well, but I really like how focused Highlands has been during these playoffs. It should be an entertaining game!

Woops... I was wrong. The 4A final features two undefeated teams in Boyle County and Lone Oak. For some reason I thought LO lost one game... they didn't.

The senior Birds are on a mission. With a championship victory, they will finish their careers, 54 - 1, counting their 10-0 freshmen campaign. 44 - 1 without a loss to a Kentucky school in their varsity years. Maybe the best class ever? One more victory and maybe they make that claim.

 

I agree. Is this the best 4 year record for a class? Maybe they'll get to play in the second half this Friday.

For those who follow 5A football for the western half of the state, how does this year's John Hardin team compare to last year's Christian County team?

 

One thing that's a bit unusual is that for back-to-back games, Highlands is playing a program for the first time EVER. HHS has never played Pulaski County prior to last night's game, and has never played John Hardin.

JH has only played one team(BG) this year that would give JC or Ryle a game and probably not much of a game.

I agree with you about JH being a very good team, but both Johnson Central and Ryle were very good teams also. Sure, JC got off to a slow start this year, but they were playing very good football at the end of the season and in the postseason. Also, Ryle, if they played in 5A, would be one of the state's top 5A teams this year, in my opinion. JH may very well be better than JC and Ryle (JH may very well be the best team in all of 5A - we'll soon see), but JC and Ryle were solid teams this year.

 

Also, in high school games (especially ones with a lot of emotion, like state title games), sometimes when a team gets down by a score or two late they get disheartened and/or frazzled and make mistakes, with the result being a wider margin of victory (say, 21 pts) than what the game really was. I remember back in 2003 HHS lost to Boyle County at BC by a point during the season, and then got pasted 44-10 in the title game... a game which was very close at halftime (maybe a 3-pt difference). I seem to remember that one of HHS' best players fumbled the ball early in the second half, as Highlands was about to score and take the lead. This play was a total momentum-shifter. Sometimes when things start going a little bad they go a lot bad quickly.

John Hardin still plays for the memory of a dead teammate. They may get beaten, but they have seen disheartened and its not on the football field.
