Every one had stopped because a whistle was blown when he went down.

Plus look at the video, appears to be a facemask but no call. Just part of the game. Maybe high school replay?

Got the video up:

I strongly recommend watching it in HQ.

The first three shots are the top shot with live audio, then the top shot at 25% speed, then the top shot with 10% speed. The top shot is slightly inconclusive. The ball is in the runner's right hand, and you don't really see it until it's coming out on his left. His right knee is the first to hit the ground, and without the benefit of seeing his front, you might think that the knee was down before the ball comes out. The next three shots are the ground shot at those speeds. Here you can see the ball moving from his right to his left as he goes down, so the fumble is already in motion at that point.

There is not instant replay in HS. If there was, X would have beaten T in the 2007 finals

His knee was down after the ball was coming out. I can't believe you could look at that video and believe it wasn't. The top shot, I could see you thinking that. But you can clearly see the ball coming free before he's down. You're talking about bias; you're the only one here so far who doesn't think that was a fumble. Only two of us are from BG.

Solid observation. I mean, I couldn't figure out why they weren't coming over to see my video.

I'm well aware of the rules and am not saying they should have overturned it or anything like that. The fact is when they blew the whistle the Greenwood player had still not reached the ball, though would have certainly been the first to do so had the whistle not blown. Once the whistle blew, this was all elementary. I simply thought that everyone might be interested in seeing whether it was a fumble or not.

Definitely a fumble. Definitely no way the guy recovering gets outside the ten. Definitely can not fault the refs for ruling it down. A very, very close call. At full speed and even looking at it from the high shot, I thought for sure he was down. The ground shot shows the ball coming loose before the knee is down but only after playing, pausing, etc. numerous times.

In a 28-6 game, I find it hard to believe it makes a difference in the outcome.

It probably wouldn't have, but only because I don't have faith in Greenwood driving 90+ yards. You have to remember that the score at the time was 14-6, and there was under 5 minutes left. X went on to score, Greenwood got desperate and started bombing the ball every down, and X got another TD with less than 2 minutes left.

It's not like the game was out of reach at that point. It was very late in a one possession game.

BTW, another thing to keep in mind is that the video you watch from the ground is very similar to what the ref would have seen. This is just my opinion, but I believe the referee who blew the whistle never even knew that the ball was loose. I don't think he was blowing the whistle as if to say he was down before the ball came out, I think he just thought the tackle had been completed and the play was over. None of the refs ever even pointed to the ground as if to say he was down. And the call was ultimately inadvertent whistle.

DID You see the face mask on the same play? probably not, yet, it was there.

I must admit, I did not until you mentioned it. That's a lot tougher to tell because of the player's black glove and what I believe are black or otherwise dark facemasks.

Even then I'm just assuming that it's actually a facemask penalty because his hand is up around the area. The player got up signaling he thought he was down rather than making a facemask symbol as I would've expected if thtat was the case.

That was abolutely awesome, DF. No question, that was a fumble. Don't know whether Greenwood goes 95 yards for a TD and gets a 2 point to tie it, but somebody was blowing a quick whistle.

They may not have had to...it looked like #19 for Greenwood would have had a shot at a big return on the recovery. Obviously, I don't know how fast he is, and I assume X has plenty of speed, so its not likely he'd have taken it the distance. But, it looks like he'd have had a shot to at least give them a decent starting point.

Tough break. That's about as close as you can get on a fumble.

Great work on the video, DF.

Everyone stopped when the whistle was blown except for the kid picking up the ball after the whistle had blown. Even if they ruled it a fumble it would have have been called dead at the recovery because of the whistle blowing.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda.....don't you just love it! :ohbrother:

What did you think the call should have been?

It was a fumble and if called correctly, the greenwood player would've been about the only player to recognize it. That being said he definitely would've returned the ball a good 30+ yards. The St.X quarterback would've been the closest man to making a tackle attempt. I doubt that St.X QB was Pat White type runner or else he'd be playing another skill position. In a 14-6 game, that would've changed the outcome dramatically IMO. St.X may have hung on to get the win, but woulda, coulda, shoulda is a great way to hide from what's real.

Congrats St.X on advancing to the State Championship. Go kick a field goal and beat Trinity 3-0.

Whether it was a fumble or not is open to discussion. However, what is not open to discussion is the fact that the official had blown the whistle before the ball was picked up and advanced by the Greenwood player. The ball cannot be advanced after the whistle (right or wrong) has blown the ball dead (or do you disagree with that.........thus woulda, coulda, shoulda thoughts of a TD runback do not matchup with what really happened). The St. X. players would not have just stood there like bumps on logs if the whistle had not blown.

By the way, on the 20 yard penalty for the kicked ball, I think the 15-yard penalty is assessed from the spot where the ball is kicked and not from the line of scrimmage...thus the 20-yard stepoff from the original line of scrimmage.
