Whether it was a fumble or not is open to discussion. However, what is not open to discussion is the fact that the official had blown the whistle before the ball was picked up and advanced by the Greenwood player. The ball cannot be advanced after the whistle (right or wrong) has blown the ball dead (or do you disagree with that.........thus woulda, coulda, shoulda does not matchup with what really happened). The St. X. players would not have just stood there like bumps on logs if the whistle had not blown.

OK, it's possible then that I misinterpreted your reaction. You're not arguing that Greenwood would have recovered the ball had the whistle not blown, just arguing how far he'd have gotten, correct? If so, I agree. If you're arguing that an X player would have gotten to the ball first, I'd point out that Shea was the only player anywhere near the ball, and the whistle was blown right as he was about to pick it up. Greenwood was going to get that ball. It was clear then, it is clear on the video. You can't possibly believe otherwise.

Several times in this thread I have said I did not expect Greenwood to go 90-95 yards, which should indicate to you where I stand on the advancement of said fumble. I've even talked about the inadvertent whistle and the fact that it was all elementary at that point. But at first glance, I took your woulda, coulda, shoulda bit as an insensitive dig at a HUGE break X got there, something that denied Greenwood any chance at winning, however remote. I respect you Ox, and I found it extremely off putting.

My argument was about the advancement of the ball which hopefully based on your response you now recognize. There were some (not necessarily you) saying that the ball would have been run back for a TD or major gain...to that I say woulda, coulda, shoulda, NO WAY.

Now that I've reapplied my deodorant, you may not be so "put off".

This was one of the worst officiated games I can remember and I have seen a lot. A game of this importance deserved officials at a level at least equal to the caliber of play and coaching. They were at a youth league level at best. In spite of this the better team did win but the frustration level on both sides was sky high unnecessarily.

I think that when anyone criticizes coaches or officials, whether it be here, radio, etc., the first statement should be how many games that they have coached or officiated, and at what level.

I have reread the BGP rules and did not find any that set any individual standard or personal experience that a member had to meet in order to express an opinion on any given subject. I feel that being an official is for the most part a thankless job and that they are in it for the love of the game. I was at the game and EVERYONE who I talked to Friday night and since who was there agreed and or had stronger opinions than mine.
