I didn't see anything wrong with what he said. Basically he was telling the strengths and weaknesses of his team and what they need to do to win. There's no cockiness in what i read. I cant wait to see how their running game matches up with our running defense though.

I also agree that Oldham has their work cut out for them, though. The Bulldogs aren't ranked #2 just because they went undefeated...they're ranked #2 because of the WAY they went undefeated!!

 

I hope the Colonels can do well and that this will be the game you want to see in a regional championship, but make no doubt - the Bulldogs are the decided favorites!

You're thinking of 2003. Oldham went 3-3 to start the year, then took off, with a regular season win over CovCath. Oldham was in the CovCath and Highlands district that year, and lost to the Birds, 29-20, at Ft. Thomas. A couple of mistakes late cost the Colonels in that one.

 

Oldham met Highlands in the regional final in 2003, after dispatching LexCath and Justin Burke in the second round game, in a contest they never trailed. Actually led big at one point, although the Knights did rally to make it a four-point game at the end. However, Bramblett - who had had a monster year - blew out his ACL in that game on a pitch play, when he tried to cut on the artificial turf and his cleats got stuck.

 

Unfortunately, although Bramblett was one of the best in the state at RB, the Colonels had no real backup that year who could play at that level, and the Colonels lost to Highlands the next week in Fort Thomas, 21-8 in a defensive struggle. (I think it was 7-0 at the half.)

 

Good memory on your part. Kevin Bramblett is now the running backs coach.

 

One of two times in the last 11 seasons that Oldham has been victimized by a critical RB injury in the playoffs' second round on a team that had matured and caught fire. In 1998, the Colonels had a runner named George Taylor who rushed for 2,000 yards. Oldham lost their opener, 21-7, to Tates Creek , the eventual 4A runner-up (Oldham was 3A), then ripped off 11 straight wins. They met Waggener in the region final game, and Taylor was injured late in the first period fielding a punt - Waggener won, 39-28, and ultimately faced Highlands in the final game.

 

Oldham has been top 10 several times in the past 11-12 years. Defensively, I think this team measures up to those top 10 squads very well. The secondary and linebackers, in particular, are superb. Offensively - better than some Oldham teams of the past decade, not as good as others. There's no Bramblett on this team - but there's a trio of very competent, hard-running kids that make up a good running back by committee.

Thanks for the info! Now I remember the issue about Bramblett's knee injury in the LexCath game and what effect that loss potentially had on the outcome of the HHS-OC game the following week.

“Playing a tough, competitive schedule paid off for us,” Oldham County coach Matt Brown said. “Playing teams that were platooning players and then going to teams that didn’t do that was totally different. Last year we played St. X and Madison Central, but this year we played a lot better competition overall.”

 

“I think our offensive line is better,” Brown said when asked how his team is different this season. “We don’t necessarily rely on the big play. Last year, we depended on the big play. Defensively, we’re better.”

 

“The kids do a pretty good job,” Brown said. “We have very good kids and I trust my defensive coordinator. I allow him to do things that I wouldn’t do because I’m a little more conservative. The kids do a great job of responding to what we’re doing.”

 

“They’re balanced, but they like to run the ball more, in my opinion,” Brown said. “We have to limit the big plays. They have the ability to drive the ball down the field, but we can’t give up the big play. We have to be in the right spots each time. We can’t have any breakdowns because they will make you pay.”

 

“That’s the thing about our offense is we have three backs and all three guys are going to get touches,” Brown said. “Yepko is best going straight ahead. Leary is our best combination back. He has speed and power. Oldham is our slasher. We can run the same play with each one, but we get a different look.”

 

“They are so athletic,” Brown said. “They have athletes all over the place. I would compare them to Shelby County, which has a good defense. They have all four of their linemen back and that’s very concerning. No. 30 (Sammy Smith) is all over the place. It’s going to be tough for us.

 

“We can’t go three-and-out or we’re going to be in trouble,” he added. “We have to be able to move the ball on the ground. If we have to punt after a three-and-out, that’s going to cause problems.”

I don't believe there's any place on BGP where it's appropriate to attack the character of a player or coach. Check out the threads on Oldham County throughout this board. You will see countless references to Matt Brown by other coaches, and fans of both Oldham County and Oldham's opponents as to the class this young man has exhibited throughout his young coaching career.

That's because teams around here beat each other up. There is a lot more balance here than there is on the east side, where your team has it easy all the way through. I think the Dawgs take the Bluebirds by two scores or more assuming Highland makes it that far.

I always thought the Oldham county fans were very arogant. After joining BGP and having a little interaction with some I have come to realize they just have a great deal of pride. I'm sure the coach is in the same boat, as well he should be.

I'm not aware that I had a fan base. JH's fans are sometimes a little over the top... I'm very aware of that. As an outsider, I've just noticed that Coach Matt Brown seems more confident than he did last year. Don't mean to imply anything. Just a simple observation from year to year.

From what I've gathered both JH and OC have first-class programs and fan bases and I bet it will be quite a game on Friday night. Best wishes to both teams.

Last year for John Hardin. Made it to the semi-state game and was beat by Christian County by a touchdown in the last few minutes of the game. This is J H's 9th season of football.

As a broadcaster / writer, I'm looking at these quotes and simply can't see what you're seeing, which makes me think you're looking for something you want to see, in order to stir a pot. When he said "I think our offensive line is better", he was - as the article states - comparing this year's Oldham County O line vs. last year's. That's not an arrogant - or even confident, necessarily - comment. Did you see last year's Oldham County O line?? That was a good group of kids who over-achieved, but it was not the strength of last year's Oldham County team. If you know anything about last year's Oldham County team, that comment makes a lot of sense.

 

You have to remember, someone being interviewed answers the questions put forward to them. In this case, Brown was asked how this team is different from last year's Oldham County team. I ask these questions in interviews every year, and get the same types of responses. I don't think all the coaches I interview are arrogant...

I'm NOT a very sensitive person at all - I think Coach Brown is more than capable of defending his honor if needed - but I do feel BGP has no place for comments that attack an individual's character. And calling someone arrogant is just that.

 

In the world of communications, sportscasters' and sportswriters' feet are held to the fire because what they communicate is attributable to them. It's a "put up or shut up" world. On BGP, however, your comments are anonymous; hidden behind a pseudonym.

 

I'm simply saying this: Please choose your words more carefully when describing another person on this board.

 

In fairness, there are plenty of ARROGANT coaches. If you and I ever get to meet (and feel free to stop by the press box Friday night, I'd love to meet you), I'll be happy to discuss, in private, such coaches. But you obviously don't know Coach Brown. This guy has only recently entered the head coaching ranks, yet he's already developed quite a reputation as a good coach and an even better sport.
