I always thought the Oldham county fans were very arogant. After joining BGP and having a little interaction with some I have come to realize they just have a great deal of pride. I'm sure the coach is in the same boat, as well he should be.

 

You just needed to get to know us a bit. :banana: In covering HS sports for 31 years now, I've observed that it's become a pretty quiet bunch, really, compared to most schools. I think they have as much pride in their teams as anyone, but it's not a very loud bunch, and they haven't really become become "known" for doing anything in particular at ballgames.

 

Certainly, I'm very sure that Oldham has some "bad fans", just as every school does. KillerD, if you ran into some of those, please accept my apologies.

 

20 years ago, Oldham County HS was known for its rabid basketball fans; a typical home game was standing-room only during the JV game preceding the varsity game (gym holds 2500), but today, the kids have so many other things to do, and parents are so busy, the attendance at Oldham County HS has really dropped at basketball games.

 

I think football attendance picked up this year, as excitement came back to the program with Matt's arrival last year and the ensuing district championship.

From what I've gathered both JH and OC have first-class programs and fan bases and I bet it will be quite a game on Friday night. Best wishes to both teams.

 

Question: what is the farthest these two teams have ever gone in the playoffs?

 

Oldham's been around since 1953, and I really don't know for sure...I think they've won the region before, but I really can't remember. The structure of the playoffs has changed so much over the last three decades...

 

Since 1998, Oldham County has lost in the third round four times (in 11 seasons).

 

The 1998 team (9-1 regular season) made it to the third round of the Class 3A playoffs, where they lost to Waggener (eventual 3A runner-up)... That team's only losses were to the 4A runner-up (Tates Creek) and to Waggener in the playoffs.

 

The 2001 team finished 2nd in their district behind Trinity, and lost to the Rocks in the region title game (third round). The Rocks went on to win the Class 4A title.

 

I've already mentioned the 2003 team that lost to Highlands in the region title game in class 3A after Bramblett went out.

 

The 2007 team rose from the dead late in the season and upset Anderson County in the second round of the playoffs with two scores in the final 4 1/2 minutes, then lost to Owensboro, 14-6, in the region title game in Owensboro. A very questionable call on the goal line had a lot to do with that game's outcome.

 

Another notable Oldham team was in 1984...

 

The 1984 team - back when the teams had 11 regular season games and there was two AP polls, one for Jefferson County and one for "state" - went 11-0 in the regular season and shut out six opponents while allowing the 2nd fewest ppg of any team in the state, about 3 ppg. (PRP was #1 in scoring defense that year). That team was ranked #1 in class 4A state (largest class back then) and was the favorite to win Class 4A, but they were upset in the third round of the playoffs by Christian County, 6-0, on a muddy mess of a field. Christian County went on to win Class 4A over Ballard in the final.

Last year for John Hardin. Made it to the semi-state game and was beat by Christian County by a touchdown in the last few minutes of the game. This is J H's 9th season of football.

 

JH has had tremendous success in a very short period of time. Gorgeous stadium, too! I understand the press box will be a little crowded, Friday, but I'm really looking forward to coming back there for a broadcast!!!

Now this is bold! What I like most about it is that the poster first asserts that Highlands "has it easy all the way through," then proceeds to suggest that Highlands may not make it to the title game. So which is it... HHS has a cakewalk to the finals or HHS gets beat before making it to the finals?!?!?!

 

Anyway, as for the JH-OC game, I predict a close game until JH pulls away a bit in the 4th quarter and wins by two scores.

As a broadcaster / writer, I'm looking at these quotes and simply can't see what you're seeing, which makes me think you're looking for something you want to see, in order to stir a pot. When he said "I think our offensive line is better", he was - as the article states - comparing this year's Oldham County O line vs. last year's. That's not an arrogant - or even confident, necessarily - comment. Did you see last year's Oldham County O line?? That was a good group of kids who over-achieved, but it was not the strength of last year's Oldham County team. If you know anything about last year's Oldham County team, that comment makes a lot of sense.

 

You have to remember, someone being interviewed answers the questions put forward to them. In this case, Brown was asked how this team is different from last year's Oldham County team. I ask these questions in interviews every year, and get the same types of responses. I don't think all the coaches I interview are arrogant...

 

How would you have answered the question?

 

I'm NOT a very sensitive person at all - I think Coach Brown is more than capable of defending his honor if needed - but I do feel BGP has no place for comments that attack an individual's character. And calling someone arrogant is just that.

 

In the world of communications, sportscasters' and sportswriters' feet are held to the fire because what they communicate is attributable to them. It's a "put up or shut up" world. On BGP, however, your comments are anonymous; hidden behind a pseudonym.

 

I'm simply saying this: Please choose your words more carefully when describing another person on this board.

 

In fairness, there are plenty of ARROGANT coaches. If you and I ever get to meet (and feel free to stop by the press box Friday night, I'd love to meet you), I'll be happy to discuss, in private, such coaches. But you obviously don't know Coach Brown. This guy has only recently entered the head coaching ranks, yet he's already developed quite a reputation as a good coach and an even better sport.

 

No hard feelings, EasyPro - I'm just saying watch your words! You're "the man/woman" behind the curtain, and you can't take your words back once you type them.

Fair enough. Some coaches used to take the "woe is me" approach a lot. You don't find that much anymore, though. Frankly, I prefer a coach who will answer questions. I don't get many "sandbagging" coaches any more in interviews...most answer the questions straight up.

Seriously, I broadcast 80 games a year, and talk to at least 70 different coaches each year. And I still wouldn't compare any of them to Lane Kiffin, at least in regards to the courtesy they show when talking to the public.

 

What they're like INSIDE is their business...
