My home PC has a virus. Ads to pornographic websites & Viagra & other things pop up. I have no idea how this happened, as nobody has even been on the PC for about 2 weeks.

 

What's the best free anti-virus program to download so that I can eliminate this? I think there is a virus that is taking the form of "Anti-Virus Pro Scan PC" or something like that. It keeps trying to scan the computer, but seems shady.

 

Any help?

I have used AVG for about 4 years now. It is the best that I've used. I have the free version.

I've heard good things about Avast. A buddy has it.

In addition to anti-virus software I would also run Spybot or another similar program.

 

As far as anti-virus I use AVG and Nortons. However I’ve had problems with Nortons 360 on Vista machines.

I've had good luck with Windows' Live One Care.

 

You're probably right about the program trying to scan the PC being shady.

The thing scanning the computer is the virus. I use avg. I googled avg free. There is a way to run malware in safe mode, but I don't know that. Someone put it on here not too long ago.

It is a fake trojan virus and you will need a professional to clean it. Call Geeks on Site they do a lot of work for me. They can fix it remotely call 502-515-8952.

I downloaded Malwarebytes.

 

Every time I try to open it, a red warning box pops up that says:

"Application cannot be executed. The file malware.tmp is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?"

 

I always click no, because I'm pretty sure that's the virus...how do I circumvent that?

How do I get into safe mode?

I did a search...I think all I have to do is hold down F8 when I turn the computer on.

malwarebytes does a pretty good job, but it may take several attempts to get rid of the virus.

I just finished with that scan. I did the full scan & it took about an hour, maybe more.

 

There were 35 infected objects. I just restarted the computer, so it is the moment of truth...

I would run the scan several times. There is also another one I use - SUPER AntiSpyware. Run each multiple times. Also, if you have the virus I think you may have, your registries may all be messed up. These can be a pain to fix.
