Just thinking - but once changes started being made in the playoff system, there was no stopping - everyone has a "better idea" - we can hardly remember the "way it used to be" because it would depend on who you were talking to. Some of it is crazy now - the distance teams have to travel to play district games, the disparity between #1 and #4 in some districts, the length of post season, 6 classes based on male population when the classes might be better divided geographically, and on and on.

 

For some getting to play one more game is great, for some it is dreaded, for some districts it is needed to determine who advances.

 

I used to not like the Sweet 16 format and wanted it changed - now I am thinking if they started making changes to it we would end up with as many opinions as we do in football.

If we are going to keep the six classes, I am for the following:

 

Have a Championship Tournament. Everyone makes the playoffs and play a single elimination tournament to crown a State-Champion in each class. Every team will get to play at least an additional game, maybe more, and have an opportunity to upset a district/regional rival. Some may say this will take to long, but really it will only add a few games to the current playoff format. Currently 32 teams, from each class make the playoffs, and Class 1A has a total of 41 teams, Class 2A has a total of 33 teams, Class 3A has a total of 39 teams, Class 4A has a total of 35 teams, Class 5A has a total of 37 teams, and Class 6A has a total of 36 teams. So, going from 32 to about 38 teams, on the average would not add that many games to each class's playoff format.

To implement this we only have to add the additional 1-9 teams to the playoff bracket and let them play until we have a State Champion.

I think one class needs to be Private schools only, and I really don't care which class it is. But put LCA/ Lex. Cath. St. X, Trinty, etc., all in one class.

Step 1. Go back to four classes.

Step 2. Do away with regions (what do thy really mean anyway).

Step 3. Have 8 conferences in each class (about 7 teams per conf)

Step 4. Top 2 teams qualifiy for 16-team playoff

Either system would reward those who have done well within their conference throught the year and would still allow out of class or out of conference games.

 

Part of the development of young athletes is to prepare them for adulthood, telling them everyone wins and goes to the playoffs is not how we should be doing that. If you like that idea, why don't we just get rid of the playoffs, add four or five more games to the schedule and then give everyone a state championship trophy.

Could not agree more! I think using a points system like Ohio has some merit as well. Put the best 16 in the playoffs every year and crown a true champion.

I agree... Another thing some people need to think about is the extra money being generated by the new system which is helping fund better equipment and non revenue generating sports like softball, volleyball, baseball and so on...

It is an opportunity that is based on a reward system. I do agree that those that win state have earned that title, but not everyonw deserves a chance to compete. This is teaching them nothing about life other then no matter what tehy do, they will get another chance. That is not a good lesson.

And who is getting the money from this extra and uneeded game? It does not make enough money for both schools involved to cover the extra costs that it is putting on those two schools when you are getting blown out if you are the #4 seed. Waste of time and money.

Not a fan of the points system. Just make eight conferences in each class, send the top two to the playoffs. If you do not do well in your district, you do not deserve to have a chance to play for the state championship. Every team has a chance to be in the top two in their own district and you do not have to worry about a point system.

Do you have anything to back that claim up? I know in the last two years Monroe County has profited from the games against a 4/3 seed...

I just don't get how people equate life and the implications that an extra playoff game has on it. That seems a little absurd to me, I worry as much about the use of plastic spoons as I do that. I can't ever remember a criminal crediting their ways to the lessons they learned from their high school playoff system...

Fact is, if you asked any kid in the state if they would like to have the opportunity to play one more game I'm sure most would say yes. That’s enough for me...

I'm not a fan of the point system, Just look at Cincy Colerain. They drop their first two games, Cincy X, Elder, then run the table, are conference co-champs and ranked #6 in the city, and get shut-out of the playoffs.

I like 5 classes with 5-6 team conferences, the top 3 teams make the playoffs and the #1 team gets the bye week.

The current system is too watered down, too many teams do not deserve to make the post season.
