First time ever I didn't watch a single second of the World Series. I can't stand the Yankees and I hate the way MLB's salary system works. I hope more and more people turn away from MLB until they truly give every team a chance to legitimately compete.

I never said that bought one in 2003. I was fully aware of the 2003 Marlins team.They did buy one in 1997 as my post stated. His posted stated that the Marlins proved that you can't buy a World Series. That was incorrect.

Because looking in the mirror is going to narrow the gap in the free agency market? The only way the small market teams compete is building from the ground up with a lot of things going right. What went right for the Yankees? They bought CC, Tex, A-Roid, Burnett and others. Could KC or Cincy go out and do that realistically?

While the Yanks are playing by the same rules as everyone else is I don't think its good for a $200M team to win the Series. You can't have the 'best" teams being the "richest" teams on a consistent basis. I know there have been exceptions but they are few and too far between.

So what? That is the exact problem. If only 3 or 4 teams can dish out that kind of cash that ISN'T a problem?????

The Yankees won the World Series on the baseball field, not at a bank. Sure, their payroll is tremendous, but are their players REALLY that much better? Break it down, position by position and at bat success rate for this series and you'll see that the Yankees simply played better baseball than the Phillies (the Phillies have some remarkable players - the consensu MVP was Utley) and that since they ended up with the best record in the league, they must be better, but it's a team sport. Paying ARod, Tex, CC, etc, etc doesn't make the player better nor does it make the team better. They paid the players big bank because they wanted them to be Yankees; plain and simple.

 

Heck, it took them nine years to get here because of the patience of the Steinbrenner family.

I agree.

 

Baseball needs a salary cap. But it will never happen. The Players Union was so stubborn about that issue that they shut down the entire season and World Seiies in 1994 (and nearly destoryed baseball by doing so).

 

The rich teams keep buying the best players and it's hard for the small markets to keep up with them. The Marlins and D-Backs did it one year, but it was a small time frame and they couldn't keep it up. The Yankees will never be down. Too much money in their franchise. They may not win it every year, but they'll always be knocking at the door, unlike most teams.

 

With that said I will add that I would root for North Korea before I would the New York Yankees. I didn't like them from the time I first started watching baseball in the early '60's when Mantle, Marris, Yogi, and Whitey played (plus they beat my beloved Reds n the '61 WS:cry:).

 

BTW, back in the '50's and '60's the joke around baseball was that the Yankees used the Kansas City Athletics as another Farm Team for their franchise. The rumor was that they had a secret deal with KC, and it sure looked that way since nearly all KC's good players ended up in Yankee pinstripes. Anything for an advantage I suppose.
