Cooper 27 Beechwood 0 (Frosh)

Final score in the freshman championship game, small schools league.

Halftime score was Cooper 6 Beechwood 0. The game was unfolding exactly as Beechwood hoped. They were keeping it close with a very basic offense and saving their new packages for the second half. Unfortunately, the key play in the game happened with about 5 minutes left in the half - Beechwood's RB/S Gage Erdman left the game due to injury in the second quarter. Beechwood could not overcome losing arguably their best player and one of the top 3 players in the league. It took away their offensive game plan for the second half and they lost their big play stopper on defense. Cooper took advantage in the second half and made a number of big plays on offense as well as a punt return for a TD by perhaps the league's best player, QB/S Tyler Morris.

Congratulations to Cooper on a great season. They were the best team in the league all year and they proved it on the field. They have a lot of good players that can help make Cooper a winner if they do their work in the years to come.

Beechwood also had an excellent season. They were the only team in the league that challenged Cooper during the season. The 12 freshmen on this team also have a lot of talent and will keep the Beechwood program rolling.

Curious as to why Cooper is in a small school league. Aren't they 6A?

Decision made pre-season because they are growing a program and had a rough season last year. After the great year this year, I am sure they will move up with the big schools next year. I think they have close to 300 in their freshman class and will probably be close to that next year as well so they should fit in with the big schools.

You hit the nail right on the head!! :thumb:

Decision was made after last year's Cooper freshman struggled GREATLY with some of the smaller schools, but also against some bigger schools. Schedule was made in February before anyone knew exactly what kind of team the freshman would have, and before the freshman team had a coach. You can guarantee though they will be playing with the big boys next year!

Excellent season for the Young Jags, now, get to work in the off-season and bring those winning ways to the varsity and JV:dancingpa

Great job Jags! Now keep it up at the next level.

Congrats to boths teams on a hard fought game. Cooper finishes off their season undefeated. Good luck to all the kids in the future years. :thumb:

Best wishes on a speedy recovery to Erbman.

Congrats to both teams on a well played game. The injury definitely took alot away from Beechwood. I am not sure how it may have ended up, but I would of liked to see if all stay healthy.

Speedy recovery to Erbman as well as the Cooper player who was hurt right before halftime and did not return. With all due respect, I think Cooper still wins this game if everyone had stayed healthy but possibly a little closer. Morris may be the best freshman in NKY and Newsbaum (sp?) may not be far behind as he is very good as well. Freshman coaches did well preparing the kids for the rematch. Are the Cooper kids the only undefeated freshman team in NKY this year?

Maybe they should have used them the first half. They didn't score then either.:idunno: Beechwood played tough, just lost to a better team, possibly the best in NKY this year.

Cooper was the better team, but as pointed out Beechwood would have made a better showing with Erdman. The Cooper goal line stand at the end of the first half was huge. Beechwood had Nussbaum rush 4 straight times and he came up a foot short. With Erdman as a ball carrier, Cooper could not have stacked the line the way they did. I thought Nussbaum was the game's outstanding player by a wide margin. He made several great catches of balls that were thrown into a crowd. He not only made a leaping one handed interception well downfield, but secured the ball before falling to the ground. Everyone knew who would run the ball for Beechwood, but stopping him was another matter,

The Cooper quarterback was absolutely excellent also. He has a strong accurate arm and with better receivers, would have put the game away in the first half. Cooper also has excellent running backs.

Until I saw this game, I thought freshman football was down from last year when True and Vocke led their teams. This game restored my faith that there are still some top freshman coming along....and not just the ones I mentioned. Congratulations to both teams who played hard and played well.

Wish a speedy recovery to Erdman, he is definately part of the future for BW football. heard it maybe a broken collarbone, not 100% sure though. congrats to Cooper they had a great year

We will never know since the two top big school teams were playing over in Park Hills. Cooper looked very good and beat everyone that was put in front of them, but I know it feels somewhat hollow to the staff knowing they didn't get to play against the top dog's every week.

Congrat's to Cooper for a perfect season and congrat's to B'Wood for competing at a high level every week.

I am just guessing, but I think they held the new stuff because they didn't want to give the Cooper coaches halftime to make adjustments. The first game, Beechwood used the new stuff in the first half to take the lead on Cooper at halftime and Cooper did a good job handling it all after halftime.

With two wins over Beechwood, I think everyone has to agree that Cooper is the better team. They probably win 4 out of 5 times against Beechwood. The Beechwood fans were hoping last night could be the 1 out of 5 where they win.

Cant wait to see this group of freshman from both teams in the future!
