6A top 10 Shelby County visits Buckner to play 5A top 10 Oldham County this coming Friday in the 2009 iteration of a fierce annual rivalry that dates back decades...

 

Shelby is coming off two weeks of demolishing teams from Jefferson County, first an impressive rout of Fern Creek two weeks ago, and then a shutout of Southern last week. The Rockets feature one of the most dynamic offenses in the state, with the underrated Brandon Cresap at QB, perhaps the best QB you've never heard of.

 

Oldham has rebuilt after dealing with several injuries to start the year, and has not lost to a team below 6A this year, in moving to a 6-3 record. The Colonels clinched their district this past week with a 10-7 win over previously unbeaten Anderson County and held the Bearcats to nearly 300 yards and 33 points BELOW their season average on offense.

 

Interestingly, this is how this rivalry has played out frequently over the past decades; Oldham coming in as the defensive stopper vs an electric Shelby offense...

 

Who wins and why?

 

I'll go ahead and be a homer and vote for my alma mater, but I'll tell you right now: The Colonels will be the underdog in this game and will have to play a fantastic game to win. I think Oldham is very capable of winning this game, but it will take tremendous effort and fewer penalties than we saw last Friday vs. Anderson...

 

With any luck, this will be a great game for the fans. Two good coaches; two good teams. Great Friday night entertainment.

Oldham lost to Eastern in OT, 22-21, in Buckner. (Oldham missed a game-winning FG at the end of regulation from short range)

 

This is a rivalry game, though...any prediction is reasonable.

I can understand people not giving Oldham much chance against Shelby - although it is a big rivalry game, this is a top 10 6A team vs. a top 10 5A team. Most times, the bigger team wins, even though Shelby isn't much bigger than Oldham County...

 

But I just didn't understand the overwhelming sentiment in the "Oldham vs. Anderson" BGP thread that Anderson would whip Oldham. As good as Anderson is, the game looked like a tossup to most insiders in the district...

The only reason I went with Anderson is because of the way they whipped HC and I thought OC and HC were very closely matched according to the pre season scrimmage. That obviously wasn't a very good barometer. I'll go with OC in the upset on this one.

Don't blame you at all, KillerD, for making that assessment...we're all on here making predictions based on what we know...and hoping that what we don't know isn't a problem!

 

Pre-season scrimmages are always a tough time to get a handle on someone, though, unless you're the coach and know who's playing, when they're playing, and what position they're playing. Coaches go into different scrimmages with very different agendas. Players get their "final looks" at various positions...different personnel combinations are tried...etc.

 

For what it's worth...When the Oldham varsity was in the game against Henry in the scrimmage, the Wildcats' only points came off a kickoff return... Henry did not score against the Oldham varsity defense...

 

Even if it had been a regular season game, this is one of those times when comparing common opponents can really mislead. If Oldham played Henry this week - with both teams playing their best - I would predict that Oldham would win, but perhaps not by so much as Anderson won by. All because of the fact that Oldham matches up differently with Henry, and because their strengths are different strengths. Whereas Henry couldn't keep up with Anderson's offense, I don't think they could consistently penetrate Oldham's "D" - which might make for a lower-scoring game, a closer game...

 

The Colonels are district champs - but they better not celebrate long. An awfully good Shelby County team is coming to town this Friday; it will be Oldham's second game against a top 10 6A program this year...

Field was in fantastic shape last week...other parts of the state were mired in mud, but Bell Field looked superb.

Glad to hear that. Some fields are really getting destoyed this year.

Now if we can just the rain to get on out before KO it will be a great night.
