I'm giving this a new thread because the issue came up earlier in a Boyle County thread.

 

The issue is being discussed by Boyle that they might host some playoff games at nearby Centre College. They have new field turf and it will hold up whereas Boyle's current field is in very bad shape after three sloppy games played upon it.

 

When the discussion was bantered about, Commander 25 raised the issue that "both teams have to agree to any change of sight or venue for it to happen."

 

We discussed that but no real section was cited for this conviction.

 

I've seen been told that there is a section on the KHSAA website that was entitled: "Instructions and clarifications - arrangements - football playoff games, etc."

 

I'm told that line 1 states the principal of the host school shall serve as, or shall appoint a manager for each playoff contest. The Home manager will set the site for the game.

 

Line 8 states that the site of all games during the first 4 rounds in all classes shall be determined by the designated home team.

 

If this is the interpretation, then is seems that there is NO agreement required between the two schools. The decision is entirely up to the host school.

I would think the host school would have the say in the location, but it would seem like common decency to at least run it by your opponent. There would likely need to be some discussion with the opposition about possible crowds. For instance, if it's Boyle and Lexington Catholic, I don't believe Centre College could hold the crowd. But if it's Boyle/Pendleton County in the opening round, then it wouldn't be a huge issue.

 

Perhaps a better response could be from people at either Newport Central Catholic or DeSales. Neither school has a legitimate home field (that I'm aware of) and they likely have to make postseason arrangements around the host school.

DeSales will definitly have a conflict as they play their home games at Manual Stadium. If Manual beats Butler (which is very likely) both will be playing 1st round playoff games at Manual Stadium. I suppose either DeSales will find another location (Iroquois, Southern or Fairdale as none of these teams will play the 1st round at home) or move the game to Saturday.

Garrard County traveled to DeSales in a playoff opener in 2005. That game was played at Iroquois High. I don't believe DeSales was playing at Manual Stadium at the time. Didn't they move in when St. X opened their stadium at the school?

Well it does allow for seating on both sides. Centre only has one side, right? Probably about 12 rows of seats, but it does stretch from basically end zone to end zone. Boyle probably has 8-10 rows of seats and stretches from about the 15 to the 15. Would that be right, Purple?

That may not be completely accurate. I've only been to Centre twice. I've been to Boyle several times, but haven't paid much attention to size.

I've never been to Centre's football field, it just amazes me that a college field wouldn't be able to hold a high school crowd. I guess you'll just have to get there early just like at Boyle if we do move them there. The parking will be a nightmare if it's at Centre. I do know that.

Totally true. Home teams sets site. Teams have to agree on date and time, but home team exclusively sets site. That time of year, many fields have been destroyed by multiple football team levels, bands, soccer and other activities. If they can find a more suitable location, the home team, IMHO, should move the game and simply tell the visitors where it will be played.

 

Unlike baseball, there are no adopted standards for field size, bleacher size, etc. that I am aware of.

Thanks for all the replies and you are providing some excellent thoughts for discussion. I too think that Centre's stands would be an issue.

 

I've wondered if temporary stands could be placed in the end zones to provide extra seating. Then again, I've also recalled a lot of different Fields and stadiums that had horrific seating for visitors and crowds and no one seemed to care from those home sites. :idunno:

 

I started this thread because I wondered who really had the actual "say." Then I began to wonder of the occasional times I recall fields in horrific conditions (sometimes they were that way by wear and tear and sometimes man-made nature helped out ). I don't recall the visiting teams being asked on those occasions if they agreed to play in that mess because I know that the answer would have been "No."

 

gchs makes a great statement about "Common decency" but then I recalled the above scenarios and didn't see the same displayed there.

 

I don't know what will happen for Boyle's playoff games but it is interesting to hear what others think in this situation. Which is more important: The quality of the field the kids play on, or the comfort of the fans who want to see the game? :idunno:

In my opinion you do whats best for the team. There will be plenty of big playoff games with stadiums that are small and not enough seating. I don't think there would be that big of a capacity difference between Centre's Stadium and Rebel Stadium. There would be plenty of parking, people might have to walk a few blocks. The City of Danville has fine new parking garage with lots of space just a few blocks from the field. Back in the early 90's Danville had to travel to Prestonsburg for a big playoff game and fans had to deal with seating and parking issues.:scared:

That was one of the places I was thinking of that used to have horrific conditions for the fans in terms of seating, parking, etc. :thumb:

For parking.....Corbin was pretty bad, but I liked the old time feeling of the stadium and the field was outstanding. :thumb:

 

I am hearing that the first 2 playoff games might be played at Centre to let the field take a break, and that the 3rd. round would be back home. As long as they keep winning and Lex Cath beats Holmes.

Centre would be just fine holding the crowd for anything short of a Semi-state game...now parking at Centre is a whole different ball game.
