Did he play varsity as a freshman at North? Because if he only played varsity as an 8th grader last year he would have no worries about transferring.

Daryl Hicks, the Shelby County kid who played as an 8th Grader last year on Shelby's varsity, was expected by just about everyone to be the next-greatest thing in the 8th region, and who enrolled in North Oldham HS for his freshman year.

 

Apparently, he is leaving North and enrolling at Shelby now.

 

I hope Hicks is able to play, he might be the best thing in the 8th region since Jones or Hundley played in the region long ago. Meaning he will have to be favorite for Mr. Basketball in 4 years if he stays heathly.

I think we all know hurt feelings are pretty low on the KHSAA's priority list when ruling on transfers.

Wonder what it'll be like when he leaves again. Not many seem to expect this kid to finish his career at SCHS...

Definitely a possibility...but I think we're getting a bit ahead of ourselves. Remember Eric McKee of Anderson County??? Unstoppable as a freshman. Hung 36 points on a good Bullitt Central team in the first round of the 8th Region tournament his freshman year..."guaranteed" all-stater, right? Possible Mr. Basketball? Was all-region, but nothing more during a disappointing senior season three years later... Bottom-line is, right now, the key word is POTENTIAL. The kid has TONS of it...

Shelby is a heavy favorite to win the 8th this year, with OR without Hicks. Hicks was NOT a starter on last year's 8th Region runner-up team...but ALL FIVE STARTERS return for Shelby County.

 

Folks from other regions are talking as if Hicks will make or break Shelby County...he's a supremely talented player, but he will almost certainly be a sub for Shelby County this year...

 

Of course, he would start on almost any other team in the region this year...

used to be a 20 days rule..may still be in effect, enrolled stayed longer than 20 days established eligibility.. he was there longer than 20 days..could possible have to set out the 36 weeks....not sure

He is eligible because Shelby County is his home school. Eric Mosely was enrolled at J-Town for over 20 days last season and went back to his home school (Moore) and played his Sr. season.

Standout basketball player Darryl Hicks appears headed back to Shelby County High School.

 

Hicks, a freshman, had enrolled at North Oldham High School this year for better educational opportunities, according to his father Darryl Hicks Sr.

 

But several media outlets reported Thursday that home sickness caused him to withdraw from North Oldham and return to his family in Shelby County. Shelby County has been on fall break this week, so Monday would be the first day he would be able to enroll at SCHS.

 

Darryl Hicks Sr. did not return phone calls from The Sentinel-News.

 

A 6-foot-2 guard/forward, Hicks is considered by many to be the top freshman in the state, and one of the top players in the country.

 

As an eighth-grader at West Middle last year, Hicks played varsity basketball for the Rockets and primarily came off the bench to average 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds.

 

Hicks burst onto the scene nationally this summer with his AAU team The 'Ville. Hicks helped lead the squad to the adidas Super 64 14s tournament title in Las Vegas in July, and he was named to the all-star team at the Fab Frosh Camp for the top 150 players in the class of 2013 at the University of Kentucky.

 

Despite the fact that Hicks had enrolled at North Oldham, he should be eligible this season for Shelby County. The KHSAA rules state that a player has not established eligibility at a school until he enrolls and plays a varsity sport. Hicks has played a sport at SCHS, but while enrolled at North Oldham, he has yet to play a sport.

 

The Rockets' basketball team will begin practice on Oct. 15, the first day teams are allowed to have formal practices. While the team has been conditioning, SCHS Coach Mike Clark said the first three days of practice will be tryouts.

 

Clark was on vacation this week and wasn't aware of Hicks possible enrollment. He had no comment on Hicks or the possibility of his enrollment at SCHS.

 

Hicks is drawing attention from a growing number of Division I schools including Indiana, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Xavier, Ohio State, Missouri and Butler.

This part of the story really begs the question as to how he could possibly have been eligible at NO in the first place. This indicates there was no change of address in the move to NO, so I don't see how he could have played this year. Who was he staying with?
