True Freshman???

Featured Replies

Can someone please clarify for me what is a True Freshman? If you are a 1st year high school student you are a freshman. Period! Isn't it the parents responsibility to do what is best for their kid? If athletics is what they do, shouldn't they give them the best opportunity to be successful? If anyone will look up state law it states that a kid is not required to attend public school until age 6. So if a student starts kindergarden by age 6 he would be 19 when he graduated.

Only if his birthday fell between Jan.1 and June 1(graduation)

If his birthday is after June 1,he would only be 18 at graduation.I hope we got this all cleared up! Why is this a concern?

I think by the KHSAA rules an athlete is a freshman once he/she is promoted from 8th grade. The kid from Scott County that's now at Miami O lost his senior year due to repeating 8th grade. Once you are promoted your four year limitation starts.

You can be 19 and play sports as long as you do not turn 19 prior to August 1st of your senior year.

This discussion takes place in the GD 3 to 4 times a year in the AAU threads about grade exceptions, yada, yada. I agree with Clyde. A first year high schooler is just that. So, is there such thing as a false freshman? You can't redshirt in high school, so why the confusion? My guess is a parent crying because a kid was held back some time ago and theirs wasn't. Sounds like different sets of plans by the parents.

Maybe people who want to differentiate could say a 14 yr old freshman, a 15 yr old freshman or a 16 yr old freshman. The only difference it makes, as long as they are young enough to play as a senior, is the size, maturatity factor. A freshman who is 6' 4" and is 14 is different than a 16 yr old freshman who is 6'4" because he has more of a chance to grow and get stronger than the older player. That's why I like to know the approximate age of players.

An easy solution. Play with your own age group. Tired of parents holding kids back so they can have an advantage over younger, smaller kids. I've seen it too often. If they can't hold their own against kids their own age, play intra murals or rec.

Freshmen are freshmen. That's their age group.

That is a quotable quote!:thumb: Seriously, can we go 12 months without having a discussion about holdbacks or grade exceptions on BGP??????

On a side note Spindoc, were all the other pictures of good football teams taken, so you settled for the Steelers???? Whodey LOL:laugh:

Fourteen year old freshman playing against other fourteen year old freshman- not 15 or 16 year old kids that should be sophomores or juniors (depending) based on their age- not classification.

That's what makes AAU such a joke. The uptick in holdbacks is now moved into high school sports. Everyone knows which kids are holdbacks/late starters- whichever term you prefer. They carry that stigma with them just so they can 'dominate' against younger competitors.

Come on Slemac, I guess I can give you a little slack. You guys are now 1 for 8. Get back to me at week 12 or so. And the answer is no we can't avoid this discussion because there will always be those like Bandit that think that there's something wrong with holdbacks. I do not. Never the 'tween shall meet.

Then hold yours back and you can stop the griping about it. It's done at the parents discression and within the rules.

thanks for the advice. Mine are able to compete with older kids, leaving me able to play up instead of 'down'.

please continue to play yours 'down' if they cannot compete with those in their own age.

Who cares? Holdbacks are playing within the rules. Once they get to high school, college, etc. their age is irrelevant (other than being 19 before their senior year starts). And, their are plenty of freshman and sophomores and both high school and college who will get major minutes on their team.

Wow! 16 year old freshman. I was 17 when I graduated.

My only problem with sports holdbacks (in public schools) is the taxpayers footing the bill so little Johnny might have a better high school sports career but I don't see anything being done about it any time soon.
