Dixie Heights JV Football

Featured Replies

The JV football team at Dixie Heights is 5-0 as they reach the half way point in the season. The offense, which is very explosive, is led by QB Zeke Pike. He has a trio of recievers that are fast and sure handed in Goose Cohorn, Billy Menkhaus, and Spencer Riddle. There is also alot of speed and power comming out of the backfield in runningbacks Seth Bruns and Michael Wheeler. The defense, which has allowed just under 12 points a game, is also well balanced. The D-Line is anchored by D.J. Handlon, and a linebacker group led by Brian Pillman. The secondary is led by two smart hard hitting safetys in Goose Cohorn and Billy Menkhaus. With this much talent on the field, I look for the Colonels to be one of the top teams in N. Ky. the next two years.

Didn't they have a tight game with Beechwood?

Yes they had a very close game with Beechwood which ended 38-35. Pike scrambled around and tossed a ball from one side of the field to the other in the corner of the end zone. Beechwood then came back and drove down the field and came up just short on a pass in the end zone as time expired.

Hopefully the two teams will play again this Saturday as I expect the same type of game. I did read where Beechwood canceled thier JV game last week.

JV doesn't mean a whole lot when it comes to varsity football. HHS has killed everyone they have played this year at the jv level..Should be a good game when they play the Red Colonels..:thumb:

AGREED!

You never know what players will play from week to week and if kids are that good they are not playing at the JV level anyway. Who has HHS played in JV? Dixie has played:

Conner, Beechwood, SK, Conner (yes for the second time) and Ryle

Most games have been fairly close score wise anyway, although a few games seemed well in hand.

I think Highlands beat Beechwood something like 62-7.

Is that the same Zeke Pike who starts outside linebacker on Varsity? Must not be a very valuable player to risk injury for a Saturday game.

How do you start at lb on varsity and play jv????:idunno:

Ryle, Beechwood, Withrow, and Boone Co... They also beat Male really bad in a scrimmage..

You have to develop him at the qb position since he will be the starter next year.

The Dixie-Highlands game should be a good game. And true, just as at Highlands, some of the players earlier mentioned, along with others, do get varsity time also. Highlands should also have much talent at the JV level. And with the shuffeling of players to the varsity level on both teams, it should be a good game in a couple weeks. That freshman game was a little lop sided last year, something like Dixie 42-Highlands 12.

With all due respect this has been a common theme at Dixie.

As mentioned, this has been a common occurrence at Dixie. Year after year the talent is hyped up, and nothing occurs at the varsity level where it counts. I'm a Dixie fan, and this is becoming a tired song. I am glad to see the JV playing so well, but it's also JV. Right now, of those mentioned Bruns is the only one giving quality varsity minutes. Pike has played, but he's also struggled. QB will definitely be his position of the future they way it looks now. Menkhaus has been playing varsity lately, but he's far from a heavy hitter. He's struggled with the speed and size at the varsity level. I truly hope the kids keep working and developing to compete at the varsity level next year.

Pike started at linebacker the first few games, but he has not started the past couple. Regardless, he's playing QB on JV, which is the only way he's going to get experience as he sits behind Wilson. What Dixie is doing is no different than any other school.

I need to learn how to do that multiple quote thing. Here are responses to several posts above without the related quotes included.

Having seen both Highlands and Dixie JV, I think Highlands wins handily. Without Pike, Beechwood would beat Dixie's JV by 2 TD's IMO. Take away Highlands' best 5 and Beechwood's JV still wouldn't be within 2 TD's of them. A totally different level of quality and depth on Highlands' JV.

As to Dixie's talent level as commented on above, Pike is definitely a talent and Bruns is very good. The others you mentioned are all just good, solid players similar to what can be found on every other good JV team. I agree the Dixie JV group has good depth of talent overall, but nothing I consider really special that would raise expectations to a higher level than normal.

Even if Pike were still starting at LB on varsity, I agree with him being the QB on JV. As others have said, he needs the experience playing QB. Last year was the first time he played QB so he needs all the reps he can get playing QB.

The issue is the JV parents put too much stock in how well the JV teams do and believe it will automatically be the same result at the Varsity level the next year.

They become offended when people point out "it's just JV" but it's the honest truth - the powers that be are only going to look at the Varsity record when comparing programs, recruiting for scholarships, records, etc.

Different programs may only play specific underclassmen at Varsity, so comparing a JV Dixie team playing kids that play Varsity AND JV to another program who may not play their underclassman talent on both squads is like comparing apples to oranges.

Varsity is what counts when looking at the big picture. JV is a great opportunity to give kids reps and more experience but it's no prediction of a program's future success.
