NFL Week One - Random Thoughts

Featured Replies

1. Last night's win over Buffalo was the perfect game for Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. Sure, it wasn't the performance they wanted or that was expected. But, in the season opener, Brady found his rhythm and showed that this passing offense is going to be just like '07. And, more importantly, he lead them back from 11 down with 5:32 to play. That's what Brady is known for and that's what the Patriots will need. To put it simply, he showed he's still Tom Brady, and he's Tom Brady in Week One...they don't have to wait a few weeks for him to get back in full swing. I think it was huge to get a vintage comeback from Brady in the first game of the season.

2. Mark Sanchez doesn't look like a rookie. Have the Jets discovered a new blueprint? Put together a good offensive line, then trade up and get the franchise QB you want.

3. How lucky are the Packers? They get a decade plus of Brett Favre and smoothly transition into Aaron Rodgers.

4. Kudos to Tom Cable. For the first time in years, the Oakland Raiders actually looked like an NFL football team. The Raiders came out with a game plan, they played hard and took it to the Chargers with some physical play.

5. Too bad, Tom Cable has the impossible task of making an NFL quarterback out of JaMarcus Russell. That was the difference in the game. San Diego has a QB and Oakland doesn't.

6. Jason Campbell separates the Redskins from the rest of the NFC East. That's not a compliment.

7. The other three NFC East QB's? Tony Romo is a very good QB. But, he hasn't proven he can get it done when it matters most. Donovan McNabb has been great in Philly. But, he can be up and down at times and he's injury prone. Eli Manning? He's not a glamour guy, but he's always in the lineup and he does what it takes to win. I'll take Eli.

8. The Saints are a fun team. I want to see what Brees can do with a full arsenal for 16 games. Here's to hoping that Bush, Colston, Shockey, et al can stay healthy this season.

9. Cadillac Williams? Congratulations to him. Great to see him not only back on the field, but starting and playing well.

10. Jake Delhomme. :isurrender:

11. Three QB's I like better than you do...Shaun Hill, Kyle Orton, Trent Edwards.

12. Quarterbacks not JaMarcus Russell that I don't like...Jason Campbell, Jay Cutler, Chad Pennington.

13. Are the Chargers really going to limit a healthy LT (one of the best RB's in NFL history) to 13 carries and about 50% of the offensive snaps? Really? I don't like it. At all. Sproles is good, but I don't think he warrants the snaps he got last night if Tomlinson is 100%.

14. Looking ahead, if the Patriots and Steelers meet in the playoffs, the coaches should strategize to try to make sure their team gets the ball last. The game will be close, and whoever has the ball last will win, because Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger are the best in the league at the last minute drive. They rarely ever fail and both guys do it in vastly different ways. Fun to watch.

I don't think Brady remembered that he has Moss for the first half of the game. If the corners are going to play 10 yards off of him like that Brady should have been killing them. Luckily for them, he figured it out a little later. I also had issues with much of the conservative play calling (for the Pats at least) in the first half. Go 5 out and throw it all over the field. But, like you said, they found the rhythm and look good. Here's hoping to another '07 season...that team was a blast to watch.

2. Mark Sanchez doesn't look like a rookie. Have the Jets discovered a new blueprint? Put together a good offensive line, then trade up and get the franchise QB you want.
Sanchez looked very good in his debut. With young QB's like Flacco and Ryan also looking good...the future is bright for the league.

3. How lucky are the Packers? They get a decade plus of Brett Favre and smoothly transition into Aaron Rodgers.
I'm not sold on Rodgers just yet.

Plus he has the impossible task of working for Al Davis.

6. Jason Campbell separates the Redskins from the rest of the NFC East. That's not a compliment.

7. The other three NFC East QB's? Tony Romo is a very good QB. But, he hasn't proven he can get it done when it matters most. Donovan McNabb has been great in Philly. When I first read this I was going to disagree...but I believe you're right. Until Romo shows he can do something past week 10...Eli is the man in the NFC East.

8. The Saints are a fun team. I want to see what Brees can do with a full arsenal for 16 games. Here's to hoping that Bush, Colston, Shockey, et al can stay healthy this season.
The TV for this game was out of my sight range...but the score indicated a very fun game.

9. Cadillac Williams? Congratulations to him. Great to see him not only back on the field, but starting and playing well..
As a Ward owner...I'm hoping for a different outcome OR for the Bucs to run the crap out of the ball! (which I think they will)

10. Jake Delhomme. :isurrender:
 I think his time as a relevant QB is over.

11. Three QB's I like better than you do...Shaun Hill, Kyle Orton, Trent Edwards..
I like Hill a lot, Edwards actually looked ok, and Orton...well you are right there. You definitely like him better than I do!

12. Quarterbacks not JaMarcus Russell that I don't like...Jason Campbell, Jay Cutler, Chad Pennington..
I especially agree on Pennington. AWFUL QB.

13. Are the Chargers really going to limit a healthy LT (one of the best RB's in NFL history) to 13 carries and about 50% of the offensive snaps? Really? I don't like it. At all. Sproles is good, but I don't think he warrants the snaps he got last night if Tomlinson is 100%..
If I'm the Chargers I trade LT. They have lots of holes on that team and RB isn't one of them. Sproles can handle the role and they should get a lot for LT while they still can.

14. Looking ahead, if the Patriots and Steelers meet in the playoffs, the coaches should strategize to try to make sure their team gets the ball last. Two of my fav's to watch.

I have thought that about Sproles for the last couple of years, and now his team is finally shaping up. I hope they can stay healthy as well and see what Brees can really do. I know its really early, but could he top Brady's performance in '07 without Spygate? lol

Sproles seems more electrifying than LT these days, plus I need him to produce for my fantasy team lol. I agree with FKYW.

Other than them possibly attacking a little more vertically, I disagree on New England. I think part of the plan was to get the ball out quicker to allow Brady to get comfortable in his first game back. He wasn't playing bad by any means, but he was a little off during the first half. The stats seem to support that...

In the first half, he targeted Moss six times, and completed three passes for 67 yards. In the second half, he threw to Moss 10 times, and completed nine of them for 74 yards.

Those numbers make sense because New England was playing catch up at the end and Brady got better. I think he was looking for Moss all game though.

It's not that I don't like Sproles. I just don't think he warrants a 50/50 time share with LaDainian Tomlinson. Stats for last night...

LT - 13 rushes, 55 yards, TD; 1 rec, 1 yard (14 touches, 56 yards, TD)

Sproles - 9 rushes, 23 yards, TD; 5 rec, 43 yards (14 touches, 66 yards, TD)

Sproles did a lot of his damage on the final drive when Oakland was basically giving the Chargers 10 yards underneath. He had 3 touches for 29 yards on that drive.

He gives them a great weapon in the kicking game and a good change-of-pace back who is a great receiving option out of the backfield. But, he's not as good as Tomlinson. The time share should be closer to 70/30 than 50/50. We'll see, but I'm curious to see how this plays out. I don't think Tomlinson is going to be a happy camper if the playing time is divvied up every week like it was last night.

I disagree with #5. Russell played fairly well last night and has made alot of improvements over the offseason. Sure the accuracy isn't there just yet, but he made some great touch passes and also threading the needle with some bullets as well. Oakland's WRs and RBs had alot of drops last night and if they catch a few more balls, this game could be different...

12/30, TD, 2 Int?

Fairly well?

Sure, if you want a QB that can't read the whole field and can't throw a pass downfield to his WR's unless the opponent complete blows a coverage. Seriously, it's all checkdowns and screens and safe passes to his TE Zach Miller (who is very good, BTW).

When he goes down the field, everyone in the stadium holds their breath. Why? Because here's the breakdown of possible results...

40% - Russell throws a pass that only Reed Richards could catch.

15% - Russell throws into triple coverage.

10% - Russell throws directly to a defender.

10% - Russell locks onto his receiver from the snap and the defender just waits and breaks on the ball and intercepts it in stride.

25% - He actually completes the pass.

He's terrible. Oakland may have enough talent to win a few games regardless, but they're never going to be a serious playoff team with him. It's a big, big problem when you picked a guy with the #1 overall pick and you're still having to spoon feed him like a baby in his third season. He's physical marvel, but he's not an NFL QB.

The Patriots got very very lucky last night. Tom Brady or not...

2. Mark Sanchez doesn't look like a rookie. Have the Jets discovered a new blueprint? Put together a good offensive line, then trade up and get the franchise QB you want.

I'm not sure that is a "new" blueprint. I think every team wants a solid offensive line and a franchise QB.

3. How lucky are the Packers? They get a decade plus of Brett Favre and smoothly transition into Aaron Rodgers.

You call it luck, I call it great drafting. A lot of teams passed on Aaron Rodgers but the Packers too a chance and it worked out. He will be very good for a long time IMO.

4. Kudos to Tom Cable. For the first time in years, the Oakland Raiders actually looked like an NFL football team. The Raiders came out with a game plan, they played hard and took it to the Chargers with some physical play.

The Raiders were not bad at all, but let's not forget that San Diego was just an 8-8 team last year. They were getting a lot of undeserved hype coming into this year IMO. Still yet, the Raiders aren't the joke they were last year. They could win some games.

5. Too bad, Tom Cable has the impossible task of making an NFL quarterback out of JaMarcus Russell. That was the difference in the game. San Diego has a QB and Oakland doesn't.

Russell isn't very good. I agree.

6. Jason Campbell separates the Redskins from the rest of the NFC East. That's not a compliment.

I don't think the Redskins defense is as good as everyone thought it would be either. The Giants running backs had over 100 yards combined, and Eli (other than one stupid pass) really didn't make any mistakes. The Giants controlled the clock and pretty much the entire game. The Redskins need more help than just an improved QB IMO...but that would be a good start.

Romo is over rated, McNabb can't stay healthy. Eli wins championships :D.

8. The Saints are a fun team. I want to see what Brees can do with a full arsenal for 16 games. Here's to hoping that Bush, Colston, Shockey, et al can stay healthy this season.

Here's to hoping Devery Henderson has another big week next week when I actually start him in a fantasy league. And there is no way Shockey stays healthy all season. He's probably already injured.

9. Cadillac Williams? Congratulations to him. Great to see him not only back on the field, but starting and playing well.

Pretty impressive that this guy can still play at a high level.

10. Jake Delhomme. :isurrender:

He has never been very good.

11. Three QB's I like better than you do...Shaun Hill, Kyle Orton, Trent Edwards.

I think Shaun Hill will continue to get better and better. Kyle Orton is not very good, but Edwards will also have a good year this year.

12. Quarterbacks not JaMarcus Russell that I don't like...Jason Campbell, Jay Cutler, Chad Pennington.

Everyone knows Campbell is an average QB. Pennington is overrated based on last year and Cutler is over rated based on his time in Denver. I'm sure it's a little different having a cornerback as your starting wide receiver though . Maybe Brandon Marshall is what made him good? Along with Eddie Royal and the rest of the Broncos crew of course.

They better not. I need fantasy points. He still produced in the limited touches he got though.

The Patriots and Steelers will make the playoffs unless there are some bad injuries. And I can think of another QB who deserves to at least be in the discussion for "best at the last minute drive". :D

Correction.

Eli wins championship. Singular.

And, I can remember when you would endlessly argue that Jeremy Shockey wasn't injury prone. Funny how a change of uniforms can allow us to see things as they are.

I've argued a lot of things just to argue. I don't recall arguing that Shockey wasn't injury proned but if I did I'm sure I had something to base it on. You do realize he missed most of last season with an injury right? And in his last season with the Giants he missed the playoffs and the final game with an injury?

He's been out of a Giants uniform for over a year now.

And technically Eli won an NFC Championship, and a Superbowl Championship. That's Championship(s). Plural.

So Donovan McNabb has won a championship then? Gotcha.

I realize Shockey has been injury prone for a long time.

NFC Championship. Yipee. :dancingpa:notworthy:

We need to adjust all our QB lists...Marino goes up. He won a championship. McNabb goes up. He won one, too. Who else? Jake Delhomme, who you say has never been good, has a championship. Trent Dilfer has championships. Brad Johnson has chajmpionships. Heck, even my QB in Tennessee has one.

Don't get too riled up OR, it was a joke.

And McNabb did win an NFC Championship. I'd say he has a ring to prove it.

Unfortunately for him it's not the best or most important one. Eli has that one as well.

I realize Shockey has been injury prone for a long time.

Like I said to OR...don't get too riled up about my post, it was meant to be sarcastic. Calm down.

And Jake Delhomme has never been all that good. He had a decent year that season he went to the championship game though.
